Green, White, Green Takes Over Social Media as Celebrities and Citizens Celebrate Nigeria’s Independence Day (Photos).
Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1st is always a moment of national reflection and celebration, and this year, the most vibrant displays of patriotism were not just on parade grounds, but on the social media feeds of the nation’s biggest celebrities. Against the backdrop of the country’s green-white-green flag, stars from Nollywood and beyond used fashion to express their solidarity and national pride.
While the official celebration at the Eagle Square in Abuja was cancelled by the President, Nigerians from all walks of life participated in their own way, with a popular trend emerging: dressing in outfits featuring the iconic national colours.

Veteran Nollywood actor and style icon, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), led the charge with his characteristic panache. He shared a powerful portrait of himself looking regal in a perfectly tailored green outfit with crisp white detailing, embodying a sense of dignified pride that resonated deeply with his followers.

The celebration of national identity also showcased Nigeria’s diverse social tapestry. Popular cross-dresser James Brown made a bold statement in a elegant green and white ensemble, demonstrating that patriotism transcends all boundaries. Similarly, the internet sensation and content creator Jadrolita charmed her audience with her fashionable interpretation of the colours, proving that the national spirit is alive and well in the younger, digital-savvy generation.

They were not alone. A scroll through social media platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) revealed a flood of celebrities, influencers, and everyday citizens adorned in everything from elegant ankara prints to casual t-shirts and accessories in the green-white-green palette. On the streets of Lagos, Abuja, and other major cities, the colours were a common sight, turning the entire nation into an informal, decentralized parade of unity.

This public display of fashion-forward patriotism stood in contrast to the reports of a muted official ceremony. The traditional President’s match-past, typically a vibrant display featuring marching bands and secondary school students, was canceled this year by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
