Israeli forces are moving forward with a large-scale operation to take apart the network of underground tunnels built by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the country’s defense minister said on Monday.

In an official update, Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the military is using two main methods to put the tunnels out of use: setting off explosives inside them and filling them with liquid concrete to seal them shut for good. He confirmed these efforts are happening in all areas of Gaza that the Israeli military currently holds.

“The work of destroying the tunnels is progressing according to plan,” Katz said in his statement, after he was given a situation report from the army’s deputy chief of staff.

This push to dismantle the tunnels is a central part of Israel’s broader military campaign, which aims to weaken Hamas’s ability to fight. The underground passages have been a major feature of the conflict, used by the group to store weapons, move its fighters without being seen, and house command centers.

The scale of the task is considerable. As of last month, Israeli estimates suggested that about 60 percent of the tunnel network was still intact, showing how much work remains.

Looking ahead, Minister Katz also touched on what might happen after the current fighting subsides. He said a multinational force, led by the United States, is being considered to take charge of disarming Hamas in parts of Gaza that may still be under the group’s influence when the active combat ends. This kind of international involvement would be a key part of managing security in the area in the future.

No specific date was given for when the tunnel demolition work is expected to be finished, or when the proposed multinational force might be put in place. For now, the focus remains on what the Israeli military describes as the slow and deliberate process of making the tunnels unusable.
