Son of Borno Governor Allegedly Kills Chinese National.
According to Sahara Reporters, Umar Zulum Umara, son of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, has been arrested for allegedly killing a Chinese national during a fight over a woman at a nightclub in New Delhi, India. Umara, a student at a university in New Delhi, reportedly smashed a bottle of alcoholic drink on the Chinese man, who had shown interest in the same woman as the governor’s son.

The incident allegedly occurred two weeks ago while Governor Zulum, along with the governors of Adamawa and Yobe states, was in Pakistan attending a post-insurgency workshop. A source close to the family revealed that this incident mirrors a past event, claiming that the governor had similarly hit a man to death during a fight at the same age as his son.
The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, further disclosed that the behavior of the governor’s family is well-known in Borno State. “Make no mistake, Governor Zulum’s son is the Nigerian governor’s son you heard about who killed someone in India,” the source stated. “What happened was that the boy engaged a Chinese national in a fight over a lady at a nightclub in India. Zulum’s son smashed a bottle on his head, leading to his death. He was arrested by the police.”

The incident prompted Governor Zulum to abruptly cancel his planned trip to the United States and fly to India to address the situation. Although he attempted to resolve the matter with the Chinese parents of the deceased, the Indian authorities insisted that the crime was against the Indian state and not the deceased or his family. The governor then returned to Nigeria to garner support and enlisted the help of Agriculture Minister Abubakar Kyari. Together, they tried to involve the Indian embassy but to no avail.
According to the source, Umara is currently in detention and will be prosecuted in due course. Additionally, the source highlighted that Umara had been previously arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives at the Maiduguri International Airport for possessing excess hard currency, but the matter was later dismissed with claims that he was contracted to supply vehicles.
When SaharaReporters contacted one of Governor Zulum’s media aides for comment, the aide replied, “I don’t know about this matter, but when I get any information about it, I will relay the same to you. However, don’t quote me, please.”
