“I Was Only Protecting My Mother” – Son and Mother Beat Father to Death in Minna.
A story coming out of Minna, Niger State, has left many people confused and angry. A man in his sixties is dead. And the people responsible are his wife and his own son.
According to reports circulating on social media and later confirmed by local sources, the incident happened behind Shango Primary School in Minna. The father, Mr. Ali Haruna, 60, and his wife were fighting. The reason for the fight has not been made clear, but witnesses say it was a family matter that could have been settled with calm heads.
Then things took a bad turn.
Their son, Usman Ali Haruna, arrived at the scene. But instead of separating his parents or trying to calm things down, he chose a side. His mother’s side.
Usman reportedly joined the fight and started beating his own father. The blows were heavy. The 60-year-old man could not take it. He collapsed on the ground unconscious. Neighbors rushed him to the IBB Teaching Hospital, but he died on the way.

What started as a fight between husband and wife ended with a man dead and a family destroyed.
When newsmen spoke to Usman after the incident, he did not deny beating his father. Instead, he gave his reason.
“I was only protecting my mother,” he said. According to Usman, his father had a habit of mistreating his mother. He said the beating his mother suffered at home had gone on for too long, and on that day, he decided to step in.

But stepping in, in this case, did not mean pulling his father away or calling for help. It meant throwing punches of his own.
The debate online
Since the story broke, social media users have been trying to answer one question: whose fault was it?
Some people blame the father. They say if he had not been beating his wife all along, his son would not have snapped. One user wrote: “You reap what you sow. He taught his son that violence is the answer. Then the son used it on him.”
Others blame the mother. They argue that a woman should never allow her child to fight, especially not to the point of killing. “She should have stopped her son. Instead, she watched,” another person commented.
Then there are those who say the son is the one to blame. No matter what the father did, they argue, a young man has no business raising his hand against his parent. “There are other ways to protect your mother. Call the police. Move her out. But beat your father to death? That is too much,” a Facebook user wrote.
Some commenters say the blame is shared. The father for years of bad behavior. The mother for not finding a better way out. And the son for using his fists instead of his head.
One person put it this way: “This family had problems for a long time. But nobody fixed them the right way. Now one is dead. The other two may go to jail. And for what? A fight that should have ended with talking.”

From a legal standpoint, the case is not complicated. A man is dead. His son and wife have been named as the people who beat him. Even if the son says he was protecting his mother, the law does not usually permit a child to beat a parent to death. Charges are expected to follow.
But for many people online, the question is not just legal. It is moral. When a father mistreats a mother for years, when a son watches and suffers in silence, and when a mother feels she has no way out — who really holds the final blame?
That question may not have an easy answer, but a 60-year-old man is gone. A family has been torn apart. And two people who once lived under the same roof are now looking at the rest of their lives from the wrong side of the law.
