Omokri Admits He Was Wrong About Tinubu’s Academic Records After Chicago State University Visit.
Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, has opened up about his trip to Chicago State University, saying he set out to dig up dirt on President Bola Tinubu but came back with evidence that the president was genuinely admitted, attended and graduated from the school.
Omokri made the remarks during an interview with Channels Television, where he spoke about his past criticism of Tinubu over questions surrounding the president’s academic records and other matters.
According to Omokri, he, like many Nigerians, had formed his opinions from what he read and heard in the media. Rather than keep relying on second-hand information, he decided to travel to the United States to check things for himself.
He arrived in Chicago on September 18, 2022, and went to the university the following day. Officials there gave him documents about Tinubu’s time at the school. He was also shown photographs and newspaper clippings confirming that the president attended and graduated. Other materials on campus, including a hall named in Tinubu’s honour among former students, also pointed to the same conclusion.
What he found left him with no choice but to rethink his stance, even though it did not favour him politically. Omokri said he had expected to return with damaging evidence, but instead came back with proof that Tinubu’s academic records were genuine.

He later took the matter to court and, after the Supreme Court ruling, admitted on television that his earlier position had been wrong.
Omokri also noted that the BBC carried out its own investigation after his visit, and that its findings also supported the conclusion that Tinubu attended the university.

He stressed that he is committed to digging into claims properly and letting the facts lead him, even when they clash with his political leanings. He pointed to a similar investigation he carried out into allegations against Peter Obi as an example.
Reflecting on the Chicago trip, Omokri said: “I went there to tarnish the President’s reputation, but I discovered that he actually attended and graduated from Chicago State University.”
He added: “Following my court engagements, I publicly admitted I was wrong after the Supreme Court ruling.”
His comments make the point that his view was shaped by how he read the evidence at the time, and that he was willing to say publicly that he had changed his mind after a thorough investigation and after the courts had spoken.
