Pictures Emerge from Kano State’s $1 Million Mass Wedding.
The Kano State Government has married off 1,500 couples in a state-sponsored ceremony that has drawn both praise and criticism over its cost and effectiveness.
The Kano State Government hosted a massive mass wedding ceremony on August 7–8, 2026, bringing together 1,500 couples in a single event that cost taxpayers ₦1.5 billion (approximately $1 million). The ceremony, which took place across various venues in the state, was coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board and targeted low-income individuals, widows, divorcees, orphans, and vulnerable bachelors from all 44 local government areas.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the wedding was part of a campaign promise he made during the last elections. According to him, the initiative was designed to promote social stability and ease the financial burden of marriage on residents who are struggling with the current cost-of-living crisis in the country.

Pictures from the event have been circulating widely on social media, showing couples dressed in coordinated outfits. The women were seen wearing red, a colour often associated with love and celebration, while the men wore white with matching red caps. The images have generated conversation online, with many people sharing their thoughts on the scale and cost of the ceremony.
Among the grooms was an elderly man who was reportedly entering his fourth marriage, having already taken three wives before this wedding. His participation, along with that of many other older men, drew particular attention on social media.
The state government defended the wedding as a necessary intervention to help residents who cannot afford the high costs traditionally associated with marriage in Northern Nigeria. The ceremony was positioned as both a social welfare programme and a fulfilment of the governor’s electoral promise.

However, the event has not been without its critics. Many Nigerians have questioned whether spending ₦1.5 billion on a wedding ceremony was the best use of public funds, especially at a time when many families are struggling to afford basic necessities.
One concern raised by critics is the employment status of the couples who were married. Some commentators pointed out that many of the newlyweds are jobless, and they questioned how these couples would manage their marital responsibilities without a stable source of income. The argument has been made that marriage without economic empowerment could create new problems rather than solve existing ones.
Others have suggested that the ₦1.5 billion could have been used differently. Some have said the money would have been better spent setting up a small factory that could employ dozens or even hundreds of young people, providing them with a sustainable source of income and improving the state’s economy over the long term . This view holds that empowering people with jobs would do more to address poverty than a single wedding ceremony.
Supporters of the initiative, however, argue that the wedding has social value beyond the monetary cost. They point to the cultural importance of marriage in Northern Nigeria and the government’s responsibility to assist citizens who cannot afford the expenses involved.
