Sudanese Courts Sentence Two Mothers to Death by Stoning for Adultery.
Reports coming out of Sudan have confirmed that two women have been sentenced to death by stoning after being found guilty of adultery. The rulings were issued in late 2025 and early 2026, and human rights organizations are now speaking out against the decisions.
According to the African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies, one of the women was sentenced on December 16, 2025, by the Haj Yousif Criminal Court in East Nile, which is part of Khartoum State. The second ruling came from a court in either El Gedaref or Blue Nile City.
In both cases, the women’s husbands were the ones who brought the accusations against them. The charges were based on Article 146 of Sudan’s 1991 Criminal Code. That law calls for death by stoning for married people who are found guilty of zina, which means adultery.

Right now, both women have been moved to Omdurman Women’s Prison. Their cases are now heading to the appeal stage.
Rights groups have raised concerns about how the cases were handled. The African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies said the women went through what they called summary trials. They also claim the women did not have lawyers representing them during the proceedings. There are also reports that confessions were obtained under pressure.

The European Union mission to Sudan has issued a statement. They said they were shocked by the rulings and pointed out that such punishments go against international human rights agreements. They specifically mentioned the UN Convention Against Torture, which Sudan agreed to follow back in 2021 .
Several organizations have started campaigns to stop the sentences from being carried out. Avaaz and the SIHA Network are among those pushing for the rulings to be overturned. They and others point out that in the past, international pressure has managed to stop similar executions in Sudan before they actually happened.
For now, the two women remain in prison waiting to see what happens with their appeals.
