Belfast Stabbing: Victim Lost Left Eye After Sudanese Migrant Attempted to Behead Him

Belfast Stabbing: Victim Lost Left Eye After Sudanese Migrant Attempted to Behead Him.

A man who was attacked in broad daylight in Belfast has lost his left eye after a suspected knifeman tried to slice his head open, a court hearing has revealed.

Stephen Ogilvie, 44, was left with serious wounds on both eyes following the assault on Monday. The attack, which witnesses described as sickening, has since fueled days of unrest across parts of Northern Ireland.

The suspect, 30-year-old Hadi Alodid, who is originally from Sudan, appeared in court on Wednesday. He faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a blade. The judge denied him bail, ruling that the risks he poses to the public are simply too high.

During the hearing in Belfast, prosecutors told the court that Ogilvie suffered deep cuts to his right eye and lost vision in his left eye entirely. He also had slash marks on his head, face, and back.

One bystander who saw the attack was recorded on video crying out, “He’s trying to cut his head off. He’s slicing his head off.” The footage, which later spread online, shows Ogilvie pinned down by the knifeman.

Emergency services were called to the scene minutes later. When officers arrived, Alodid reportedly told them, “I have killed someone. I don’t know if they are dead.”

The court also heard that earlier on the same day, Alodid allegedly threatened to kill a radiographer. “I will kill you,” he reportedly told the worker. That incident is now part of the ongoing investigation.

Alodid appeared by video link during the hearing and chose not to speak. He was ordered to return to court on July 8.

A detective told the judge that if Alodid were released, any future offenses could be “serious and unpredictable.” Judge Stephen Keown agreed, adding that the suspect might also try to flee the country.

How the Suspect Entered the UK

Reports indicate that Alodid entered the United Kingdom through the Common Travel Area, an open-border arrangement between the UK and Ireland. Some have described this as a legal loophole that allowed him to move freely without going through standard immigration checks.

The stabbing did not remain a single news story. By Tuesday night, parts of Northern Ireland had erupted into chaos. Groups of people, some of them masked, threw petrol bombs at police officers, set cars on fire, and damaged homes.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill condemned the violence in strong terms. She said, “Groups of masked men burning families out of their homes is nothing less than disgusting cowardice,” and called the behavior outright thuggery.

Two police officers were hurt during the unrest. The chief constable, Jon Boutcher, held a news conference on Wednesday and said the protests were “an insult” to the victim.

“What we saw last night was an insult,” Boutcher told reporters. “It was an insult to the victim of that terrible attack that many of you will have watched online.” He also described the riots as “an act of self-harm” for the community.

Alodid remains in custody. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have said they are looking into whether the attack was premeditated. Meanwhile, community leaders have called for calm, urging people not to take the law into their own hands.

For Stephen Ogilvie, the road to recovery is just beginning. He has lost one eye completely, and doctors are still monitoring the condition of the other.

This story is still developing. We will bring you more updates as new details come to light.
