Breaking: Buhari Extends Usage of Old Naira Note by 60 Days

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow only the old N200 remain legal tender by 60 days, in order to improve currency circulation in the country and ease pains experienced by Nigerians due to the decision to retire some denominations of the old banknotes after a currency redesign project.

Meanwhile two people have lost their lives during a protest in Edo State yesterday.

Residents of Benin City, the capital of Edo State, who were enraged because they were unable to access their money in commercial banks took to the streets on Wednesday morning, which led to the outbreak of violent protests that resulted in at least three deaths.

The demonstrators made an attempt to break into the State branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which is situated along Akpakpava Street in Benin City.

This area is a commercial nerve center, and the majority of commercial banks can be found in this area as well. After that, they carried out a series of raids on a number of commercial banks that were situated in the region.

Similarly, the Udu road region of Delta State was rocked by demonstrations on Tuesday, which resulted in the deaths of two people and the burning down of two commercial banks over the issue of a shortage of naira.

According to reports, demonstrators went on a rampage and vandalized and destroyed property belonging to the First, Access, and Union commercial banks at the Express Junction in Udu road, Delta State.

Mrs. Bredjor Okoro, an eyewitness, said that two people had been murdered and numerous others had been hurt as a result of the demonstration a conversation she had with newsmen.

She reported to newsmen that irate demonstrators had set fire to three different banks.


“Everywhere is on fire; First, Union, and Access Banks buildings were burnt down by protesters over the naira crisis. At the moment, two people have been k!lled by stray bullets by Police officers deployed to contain the situation”, she said.
