Do smokers lungs heal after quitting?
According to a user on Quora, It depends upon how damaged they were before quitting. Some heal to some degree.
I have two friends who smoked. One is now 76. He smoked for more than 40 years. He now has advanced emphysema. He has a difficult time going out of the house and has to use an oxygen bottle. He will not get better, even though he hasn’t smoked for probably 15 years.
Another friend is maybe 60 now. Smoking cost him all of his teeth. He is a musician, but his voice is fairly thrashed. Fortunately, he is an excellent guitarist. He just quit smoking because, in his words, “I couldn’t breathe.” He will be able to breathe better, but he won’t regain a good singing voice or become a marathon runner.
People who haven’t permanently damaged their lungs typically see significant improvement after nine months. Even a day of quitting can help lessen risks associated with smoking.
With that being said, the longer you delay, the higher your risk of cancer even after you quit smoking. I know a few people who were diagnosed with lung cancer after being clean for years.
