Rituals: Boyfriend, Prophet Sentenced to Death By Hanging for Killing LASU Final Year Student and Harvesting Her Organs

In a chilling case that has sent shockwaves through the nation, a 42-year-old prophet, Segun Philip, and his accomplice, Owolabi Adeeko, aged 23, were sentenced to death by hanging for the heinous murder of Favour Daley-Oladele, a final year student of the Lagos State University (LASU). The gruesome act, carried out in 2019, was motivated by a twisted ritualistic belief.

The Osun State High Court, presided over by Justice Christiana Obadina, delivered the verdict on Monday, bringing justice to the victim and her grieving family. Additionally, Owolabi’s mother, Bola, aged 46, was sentenced to two years imprisonment for her involvement in consuming human flesh.

The tragic events unfolded when Adeeko, who had been in a relationship with Daley-Oladele, invited her to visit him in Ikoyi, Osun State. However, what seemed like a romantic rendezvous turned into a nightmarish ordeal for the young woman. Upon her arrival, she was lured to Philip’s church in Ikoyi, where she was drugged and brutally killed with a pestle.

The depth of their depravity became apparent when it was discovered that the perpetrators had harvested organs from the deceased’s body. These organs were later used in a concoction intended to bring good fortune to Owolabi’s mother, whose business was suffering at the time.

Following their arrest, the three defendants were initially arraigned before a magistrates’ court in Apomu in January 2020. However, they were subsequently re-arraigned before the High Court in Ikire in November 2021, facing charges of conspiracy and murder.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution team, led by Mrs Adekemi Bello, the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Osun State Ministry of Justice, presented a compelling case. Key evidence included Owolabi’s confession to the police, wherein he admitted to using his girlfriend’s body parts for a ritual meal aimed at benefiting his mother’s struggling business.

While the defendants chose not to call any witnesses, they took the stand to testify in defense of their respective roles in the crime. Adeshina Olaniyan, counsel for the defendants, pleaded for leniency during his address to the court.

However, Justice Obadina, in delivering her judgment, declared that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, Philip and Owolabi were found guilty of conspiracy and murder and sentenced to death by hanging. Additionally, they received a 14-year imprisonment term for the charge of conspiracy. Bola, found guilty of consuming human flesh, was sentenced to two years behind bars.

As the court proceedings concluded, a mix of relief and sorrow filled the atmosphere. The judgment served as a reminder that the society would not tolerate such despicable acts. It emphasized the importance of preserving human dignity and the sanctity of life.

The case of Favour Daley-Oladele is a tragic chapter that must never be forgotten. It should serve as a call to action for increased awareness, education, and preventive measures against the scourge of ritual killings. By strengthening our social fabric and fostering a culture of empathy and respect, we can strive to protect the lives and well-being of our fellow citizens.
