An Indian man from the northeastern state of Mizoram who is believed to have headed the “world’s largest family” has died, authorities say.

Ziona Chana, 76, who led a Christian sect that allowed polygamy for men, left 38 wives and 89 children.

The sect, called Chana Pawl, was founded by her father in 1942. It has about 2, 000 members, most of whom live in Baktawang village in Mizoram.

On Sunday, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga announced Chana’s death on Twitter.

” It is with a heavy heart that #Mizoram bids farewell to Mr. Sion- a (76) who is believed to preside over the world’s largest family of 38 wives and 89 children, ” he wrote.

Mizoram and Baktawng Tlangnuam have become major tourist attractions thanks to the family, the chief minister added.

According to official sources, Chana, who also had 33 grandchildren, died Sunday afternoon due to complications related to diabetes and hypertension, Indian media reported.

” He was shifted to a private hospital in another district and passed away on Sunday 13th, 2021 according to reports received, ” Kumar Abhishek, deputy commissioner of Serchhip district, told Anadolu Agency.

Lal Thanhawla, a former chief minister of Mizoram and senior Congress Party politician, told Anadolu News Agency that Chana’s demise was a ” great loss to all. “

” The family is very disciplined and there are many things to learn from it, ” he said.

Chana married his first wife in 1959, when he was 15, according to a DPA news agency report. His last marriage was to a 25- year- old in 2004, the report said.

Polygamy is illegal under Indian law. However, some tribes in northeast India allow polygamy under their customary laws, which state authorities sanction.

The extended family reportedly lives in a four-story house called the ” New Generation House. ” It has 100 rooms, and the wives share a bedroom near Chana’s private room.

The family has twice appeared on the popular TV show ” Ripley’ s Believe It Or Not, ” BBC News reported.

In 2014, the family also appeared in an advertisement for a major brand of dishwashing detergent, according to the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times.
