The death of an eight-year-old girl in Yemen has once again brought the issue of child marriage into the spotlight. The young bride, named Rawan, reportedly passed away from internal bleeding on her wedding night shortly after marrying a man five times her age.
According to reports received by Toktok9ja Media, the incident happened in the town of Meedi, located in the Hajjah territory of northwestern Yemen. Two neighbours and a social activist confirmed the details. The groom is said to be around 40 years old.

This case has triggered strong reactions across social media. Many users are heartbroken and angry. Medical experts and child rights advocates have pointed out that an eight-year-old’s body is simply not developed enough for marriage or any form of sexual activity. The internal injuries she suffered, they say, were almost unavoidable.
Arwa Othman, who heads the Yemen House of Folklore and is a known rights campaigner, told local sources that Rawan was married off at the end of last week. The wedding took place in a region where child marriage remains common despite years of warnings from international groups.
The sad story has reopened debates that never seem to go away. Across many parts of the world, young girls are still given out as brides without their consent. Some are betrothed from birth. Others are married off to settle family debts. In one case previously reported by activists, a father handed over his daughter to pay off gambling losses.
Social media commentators and activists are now demanding stronger action. They want governments and religious leaders to step in and put a stop to these marriages. “This is not a cultural issue anymore. This is a child’s life,” one user wrote online.
