Chained in Darkness: Abuja Community Rescues Woman Held Captive by Her Brother for Four Years (Video).
When a brother and sister started a cement business together in Abuja, they thought they were building a family empire. Instead, a dispute over profits turned into a nightmare that would leave one of them chained inside a dark room for four years.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the rescue of 36-year-old Grace Aniekuoku from a property in the Mpape area of Maitama Extension, Abuja . She was allegedly held captive by her brother, Chinedu Aniekuoku, who has since been arrested.

How the Rescue Happened
The discovery came down to a simple, everyday chore. On June 13, 2026, a local resident went to fetch water near a plumbing outlet adjacent to the compound. As he stood in the quiet area, he heard muffled sounds—scraping chains and weak groans—coming from a heavily padlocked outbuilding .
Toktok9ja gathered that realizing something was wrong, the man immediately alerted other community members. A crowd assembled at the gate, refusing to let the matter be ignored. They bypassed the locks and forced their way through the door. Inside the pitch-black room, they found Grace chained to the structure, severely emaciated and living in deplorable sanitary conditions .
Community members freed her from the iron restraints and rushed her to a nearby hospital. Due to the prolonged confinement, she had completely lost the ability to walk and required immediate medical rehabilitation.

What Police Found
The FCT Police Command received a distress report on June 12, 2026, and deployed detectives from the Katampe Division to the scene . When officers arrived, the suspect became hostile and refused them access to the premises. Police forced entry and discovered the victim in chains, extremely emaciated and lying in her own waste under deplorable conditions.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Sanusi, described the scene as deeply shocking. “Her hair was so grown, like a forest. She became so emaciated that a camera stand is thicker than her neck,” he said.
The victim and her brother had pooled their resources together to start a cement retail business in Abuja . As the business became profitable in the capital’s booming construction sector, a bitter dispute erupted over the distribution of profits and company ownership.

Driven by greed and unwilling to forfeit his sister’s rightful share of the enterprise, the brother concocted a malicious strategy. He publicly declared her mentally unstable . Under the guise of managing her alleged psychological breakdown, he cut her off from friends, extended family, and the business operations entirely.
The reality of her “treatment” was total isolation. He locked her inside a windowless, unlit room within the compound and bound her with heavy iron chains to ensure she could never escape or seek help from neighbours.
Following Grace’s rescue, a darker layer of the family dynamic emerged. Police investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly taken away the victim’s son to an unknown location about two years ago .
Investigators believe the prolonged confinement was intended to prevent Grace from questioning the whereabouts of her child . The commissioner stated that the child “may have been used for sacrifice”.

Local residents have also expressed alarm over the missing child, with some rumours suggesting the boy may have been used for ritual purposes . These claims remain unconfirmed, but police are actively working to trace and rescue the missing child .
The suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations . Grace is currently receiving medical treatment and rehabilitation at a hospital .
The FCT Police Command has reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and urged residents to promptly report cases of abuse, unlawful detention, and other criminal acts to law enforcement authorities .
Efforts to locate the missing child are ongoing . This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
