Couple Gets Engaged Atop Empire State Building — Then Arrested (Video).
A love story took a dangerous turn on Wednesday when a couple, known for their extreme urban climbing stunts, scaled the spire of the Empire State Building, only to be arrested upon their descent. The daring incident, which unfolded over 1,400 feet in the air, involved a marriage proposal and a peace message.
The individuals, later identified as Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, also known online as Ivan Beerkus, managed to access the building’s restricted upper levels. According to reports, they emerged through a maintenance hatch on the 103rd floor and climbed the narrow metal lattice of the antenna spire. The pair, who are known for their “rooftopping” adventures and were the subject of a 2024 Netflix documentary titled Skywalkers: A Love Story , performed the entire climb without any visible safety ropes or harnesses.

Once they reached the absolute peak of the 1,454-foot structure, they unfurled a large black flag that read, “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” Following the banner display, the couple descended to a lower platform where the stunt took a romantic turn. Kuznetsov dropped to one knee and proposed to Nikolau, who accepted. The couple even live-streamed the moment from the high-altitude ledge and posted photos of the ring on social media.

The spectacle drew massive attention in Midtown Manhattan, causing multiple calls to emergency services and leading to street closures around Fifth Avenue. News helicopters circled the building as the New York Police Department (NYPD) locked down the structure. Officers from the NYPD Emergency Service Unit climbed a caged ladder to the tower’s platform to intercept the couple.

After making their way down, the pair was taken into custody without incident. They now face charges including burglary, reckless endangerment, and criminal trespass. Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe commented on the situation, noting that the authorities would have to push for prosecution to deter others from attempting similar dangerous acts.

In a statement, an Empire State Building spokesperson condemned the event as an unauthorized and dangerous incident. In a lighthearted remark, they noted that the couple could have avoided the legal trouble by using the building’s official $1,000 “Happily Ever Empire Proposal Package” to rent out the observation deck for a safer engagement.
