The Oodua Peoples Congress was formed by a group of elites and Yoruba artisans who included Dr. Fredrick Fasehun (its first national leader), Aare Gani Adams (15th Aare Ona Kakanfo from Yoruba land), and a few others.
Although the founding president of the OPC was Frederick Fasehun, in 1999 a faction led by Ganiyu Adams broke away from the main organization, but continued to use the name of the main party.

Until his death in 2018, Fasehun was widely viewed by the Yoruba as the leader of the OPC, while he granted Ganiu Adams the title of national coordinator in another to unite the factions under one body.
Members of Gani Adams’ OPC were made aware of the hiding place of the second in command of Iskilu Wakilu, and through the combined operation of the OPC group under the supervision led by Gani Adams and Ago Rangers Civil Defense, four suspected kidnappers including Wakilu Ishiaq Mohammed, who is the second in command to the king’ s chief, Iskilu Wakilu, are arrested and they also recovered weapons from their home.

Here is what the head of the OPC group said after the arrest:
” We are in the bush in Igangan with members of the Civil Defense. We arrested one of the leaders of the Wakilu group and those who kept his weapons. God helped us succeed in the mission and we are going back to town to hand them over to the authority and everything we have done is on direct orders from Gani Adams, we do what he asks us to do “

After the OPC attacked Wakilu’ s group hideout, one of the arrested Fulani named Sani Adamu confessed that Wakilu was responsible for the weapons they found with them. He said his own job was to take care of the cow, but his colleague was Iskilu Wakilu’ s brother.
