A quiet farming community in Cross River State has been thrown into shock after security forces uncovered a hidden forest camp where a suspected serial killer allegedly buried multiple victims under plantain crops.

The suspect, identified as Akaninyene, was arrested on May 26, 2026, following a joint operation involving Nigerian Army personnel and local tactical teams. The arrest took place in Creektown, located in the Odukpani Local Government Area of the state.

Residents of the Ukim Ita community reportedly heard cries and the sound of a struggle on the day a victim disappeared. Community leaders and youths quickly reached out to the Executive Chairman of Odukpani LGA, Rt. Hon. Ukpong Etim Asido, who then called on security agencies to step in.

When officers stormed the hideout in the Abanyama area, the suspect tried to grab a weapon and run away. He was caught after a short chase.

Inside the forest camp, security operatives discovered at least eight shallow graves. The graves were hidden under plantain plantations, with crops deliberately planted on top to cover them. When the graves were opened, officers found multiple decomposing bodies, many of which had no heads.

During questioning, Akaninyene reportedly admitted to killing around 30 people in the area. While only eight graves have been uncovered so far, investigators believe more victims may be found as search efforts continue.

The suspect also mentioned a female accomplice. According to his statement, the woman helped lure unsuspecting victims to the forest camp before they were killed. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the accomplice has been arrested.

Akaninyene is said to be a native of Obot Akara, a local government area in neighboring Akwa Ibom State. However, he operated from his hideout in Cross River State.

The Nigeria Police Force has said through local representatives that the matter is undergoing formal verification. A full forensic evaluation is also planned to confirm the details of the case.

Community youths and tactical teams have continued bush‑combing operations around the Odukpani forests. Their aim is to locate any other hiding spots, additional graves, or other members of the criminal network who may have fled after the arrest.

For now, the community remains on edge as security forces work to uncover the full scope of what happened inside that forest camp.
