Uchechi Okwu-Kanu Denies Divorce Rumours, Says Reports Are False

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu Denies Divorce Rumours, Says Reports Are False.

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, the wife of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has come out to deny recent reports claiming she has filed for divorce from her husband while he serves a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

The rumours, which spread widely on social media, suggested that the couple’s marriage had hit a breaking point following Kanu’s conviction and imprisonment. But Okwu-Kanu shut down the speculation with a straightforward response.

Taking to her verified Facebook page, she addressed the claims head-on, making it clear that the reports were nothing but fabrication. In a post that ended with laughter emojis, she said she had just learned about the supposed divorce proceedings.

“My attention was drawn to false reports circulating online claiming that I have filed for divorce from my husband, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” she wrote. “For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation”.

She went further to express her disappointment at how easily people make up stories about her family without bothering to verify anything first. She said such actions do not help anyone and only confuse the public while undermining the standards of responsible journalism .

Okwu-Kanu advised members of the public to only trust information that comes directly from her or through people she has authorised to speak on her behalf .

The couple, who got married in 2009, have been through a lot since Kanu’s legal troubles began. He was convicted in November 2025 on seven counts of terrorism-related charges and sentenced to life imprisonment on five counts, with additional sentences of 20 years and five years on the remaining counts . The judge ordered that all sentences run at the same time.

Kanu is currently being held at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, which is over 700 kilometres away from Abuja where his legal matters are being handled . His wife has remained vocal about his case and has repeatedly spoken out on issues concerning his imprisonment.

This is not the first time Okwu-Kanu has had to clear up rumours about her family. In the past, she has spoken out against groups she felt were misrepresenting her husband’s views and has warned people against spreading false information about his situation.

The rumour about divorce appears to have been just another attempt by some people to create unnecessary drama around the family at a time when they are already dealing with so much. For a woman whose husband is behind bars, facing such baseless stories must be frustrating, but she appears to have handled it with a sense of humour, as shown by the laughter emojis in her post.

Many who saw her response have praised her for being quick to set the record straight. Her message was clear: the rumours are false, and people should stop believing everything they read online.

As things stand, Okwu-Kanu continues to stand by her husband, despite the heavy burden of his imprisonment. Whether or not people choose to believe the rumours, her public denial makes it crystal clear that she has no plans to walk away from her marriage.
