What Led to the Shooting of 200-Level UNIBEN Student, His Girlfriend, and Others.
A 200-level student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), his girlfriend, and two other persons have been killed in separate attacks in Benin City, Edo State. The incident happened on Sunday evening near the main gate of the university complex.
The student has been identified as Alexander Omogiate, a political science student. According to a Facebook user named EBEN ENASCO, Omogiate was shot multiple times at close range while sitting inside his JLK Mercedes Benz. The attackers were said to be masked men.
Three other people in the area at the time were hit by stray bullets. They were named as Onwuke Blessed, Chinenye Christian Mbagwu, and Dorothy Ubah. All three were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital with serious injuries.
Dorothy Ubah died from her wounds on Monday, according to the same Facebook source.
Later that same day, the girlfriend of the deceased student was also killed. That attack happened on Airport Road in Benin City. The unknown gunmen are believed to be the same people responsible for the first attack.
Still within the same day, another person was killed in the Uselu area of the city. Reports suggest this killing is also connected to the same case.

What Is Being Said About the Motive
The Edo State Police Command has not officially confirmed why these killings took place. However, unconfirmed reports circulating online link the deaths to a dispute over an alleged 90 million naira fraud deal.
A source who spoke under the condition of anonymity told news correspondents that trouble started about two weeks ago. According to this source, one of the suspected attackers had tracked the deceased student to his classroom. The issue at the time was about sharing money that was meant to benefit a group of people.
The source said the matter was initially settled. The late Alexander Omogiate reportedly promised to give the others their share of the money.
But one week later, things took a different turn. The source claims Omogiate changed his mind and refused to pay. That refusal, according to the same account, led to increased tension on campus even before the shooting.

At that point, the source said, people who felt they had been denied their share of the money decided to take action. There were reports of dangerous weapons like machetes and other sharp objects being used. A few people sustained injuries during those earlier clashes.
Toktok9ja gathered that on Sunday evening was the last day of examinations. The source said Omogiate was followed from his classroom by a suspected course mate all the way to the main gate. That was where the shooting happened. After firing multiple shots into his car, the masked men drove off while shooting into the air to scare away bystanders. Omogiate died at the scene.

University Chaplain Resigns Amid New Allegations
In a related development, the Chairman of the university’s anti-cult committee, Venerable Egbenusi, has resigned from his position.
In a statement he released, Egbenusi accused the Vice Chancellor of threatening him. He said he had sent video clips of suspected cult activity to the Vice Chancellor hours before the Sunday shooting. After the killing, he sent more clips.

According to Egbenusi, the Vice Chancellor called him a few minutes later and demanded that he delete the videos within five minutes. He also claimed the VC threatened to evict him from the Chapel Vicarage if he did not comply.
Egbenusi said he refused to delete the clips. He explained that the videos contained evidence that should be kept for any proper investigation. He called the VC’s demand an “assault on the office of the University Chaplain.”
Official Responses Still Awaited
As of the time of this report, the management of UNIBEN has not issued any official response to the claims made by Egbenusi. The Edo State Police Command has also not released any statement on the matter.
