Bandits Want to Surrender But They Are Afraid – Sheikh Gumi.
A well-known Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has asked the Nigerian government to think about granting amnesty to bandits. He says this should be done the same way it was done for members of Boko Haram who decided to turn a new leaf.
The cleric made this known while speaking in Kaduna. According to him, Nigeria has depended on military action for over 17 years now. But even after all that time, insecurity across the country has not stopped.
He believes it is time to try something different.

“They Want to Surrender But They Are Afraid”
Sheikh Gumi explained that many bandits are willing to lay down their weapons. But there is one big thing holding them back – fear.
He said these men are worried that if they come out openly, they will either be arrested or attacked. Without a guarantee of safety, he argued, they will simply stay where they are.
So his suggestion is simple: offer them amnesty, and they will come forward.
The cleric also raised another point. He said the government should focus on taking children away from the forests where many of these bandit camps are located. Once removed, these children should be enrolled in schools.

His thinking is that this will help break the cycle. If children grow up in the forests learning violence, they will likely become bandits themselves. But if they get an education, that pattern can stop.
Gumi did not stop at amnesty. He also said the government needs to sit down and hear what bandits are asking for. In his view, relying only on soldiers and airstrikes has not solved the problem. So leaders should be willing to listen.

He added that dialogue, rehabilitation, and education should be given a chance.
As expected, his statement has since stirred serious debate across social media. Nigerians are clearly split on the matter.

Some people agreed with Gumi. They argued that the military approach has been going on for nearly two decades without success. So why not try dialogue?
Others rejected the idea completely. They said granting amnesty to bandits would send the wrong message. Their concern is that it would reward violence and encourage more people to take up arms.
A few also pointed out that bandits have broken many agreements in the past. So trusting them again, they said, is risky.
For now, the government has not issued any official reply to Gumi’s proposal. But with reactions pouring in from all sides, this conversation is far from over.
