Did Heavily Armed Bandits Hand Over General Rabe’s Body in Katsina?
That is the question that has been circulating across social media platforms after dramatic images emerged showing masked men in military gear standing over a draped casket in what appeared to be a formal handover ceremony.
The short answer is no. But the longer answer is more complicated—and it raises serious questions about how the retired general’s remains were actually recovered while his wife remains in captivity.
Recently, several social media accounts shared a series of photographs supposedly showing heavily armed bandits handing over the body of Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd) to local elders in Katsina State.
One of the most prominent posts came from former Senator Dino Melaye, who wrote: “Heavily armed bandits handed over the body of General Rabe yesterday morning in Katsina and left for the neighbouring forest of Matazu, unchallenged! What country???”
The images showed at least eight men dressed in camouflage, some wearing face coverings, standing in a semi-circle around a wooden coffin draped with a cloth. The scene appeared theatrical—almost staged—which immediately caught the attention of fact-checkers.

What Fact-Checkers Found
Within hours of the images going viral, independent open-source intelligence units and fact-checking organisations began examining the photographs.
Dubawa and FactCheckHub both subjected the images to multiple AI detection tools. The results were consistent across all platforms—the images showed a 99 percent probability of being artificially generated.
Several visual inconsistencies gave the images away:
The weapon – In one of the photographs, the barrel of a firearm appears to pass directly through the coffin. That is a classic sign of AI-generated imagery where the software fails to understand depth and layering.
The faces – Multiple men in the images bear identical facial features. Their noses, eye shapes and even skin textures match too closely to be different individuals. AI tools often replicate facial patterns when generating multiple figures in a single frame.
The background – The vegetation and lighting do not match the geographical features of northern Katsina State.
The woman – The female figure in some versions of the image does not match any authentic photograph of Hajiya Amina Abubakar, the general’s wife, who was abducted alongside him.

What Actually Happened to General Rabe
Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd), a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife Hajiya Amina Abubakar were kidnapped on May 30, 2026 along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Their driver was shot but survived.
On June 13, the Katsina State Government announced that General Rabe had died in captivity. According to the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu, the general died from medical complications related to chronic high blood pressure and diabetes, worsened by the harsh conditions of his captivity.
But his family has firmly rejected that explanation. In an interview with Deutsche Welle, his son Isyaka Rabe Abubakar said: “The truth is that it was not diabetes that caused this illness. In our view, it was most likely a snakebite because a snakebite could explain the marks and the condition seen on his leg.”
Another daughter, Adda Abubakar, insisted on social media that a snakebite was the actual cause of death.

The Mystery of How the Body Was Recovered

While the family disputes the cause of death, an even bigger question troubles them—how was the general’s body recovered while his wife remains in captivity?
Isyaka Abubakar made this point repeatedly when speaking to the media. “When I announced the time for my father’s funeral prayer, many people began asking how the body was recovered. I told them I did not know and that they should direct such questions to the government,” he said.
“Even I myself would like to know how the corpse was brought.”
Security sources speaking to Premium Times offered two conflicting accounts:
Version One – The kidnappers contacted state officials and directed them to a location near the Karaduwa community. Bandits arrived on motorcycles with the body and handed it over to officials who came in an ambulance.
Version Two – Local residents discovered the body near a sawmill in Karaduwa. They alerted security personnel, who then arrived in an ambulance escorted by soldiers and retrieved the remains.
Neither version has been confirmed by military authorities or the state government. Official statements have carefully avoided describing the handover process.

The Government’s Position
The Katsina State Government has not responded to the family’s questions about how the body was recovered. In their official statement announcing the general’s death, they made no mention of bandits openly handing over his remains.
The Defence Headquarters acknowledged the death and offered condolences but similarly did not describe any handover ceremony or confirm the government’s version of events.
General Rabe has since been buried in Katsina according to Islamic funeral rites. His wife remains in captivity.
The images that sparked the initial confusion have been debunked as AI-generated. But the questions raised by the family remain unanswered.
Isyaka made it clear that the family does not bear ill will toward the government. “Whoever is given leadership is regarded as a father, a mother and a guardian of the people,” he said.
“My direct message to the governor is: May Allah continue to guide and watch over him. And as for us, we are waiting for our mother.”
