FG Launches FreeTV: Nigerians Get Over 100 Channels Without Subscription Fees.
The Federal Government has officially launched FreeTV, a national digital television platform that gives Nigerian households free access to more than 100 television channels with no monthly subscription charges.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, through the official X handle of the Presidency, ahead of the formal launch on June 17 . The initiative is part of the country’s ongoing Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme, which aims to move Nigeria from analogue to digital broadcasting .
The platform is expected to serve about 40 million households and generate over N600 billion in economic value, according to projections shared at the launch event in Abuja . Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, described the rollout as a milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey .
What FreeTV Offers
The platform provides access to a wide range of channels covering news, sports, movies, music, children’s programming, and educational content. It also includes dedicated channels in Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo languages .
Households will not need to purchase new television sets to enjoy the service. Existing TVs can work with compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders, and those already using free-to-air decoders may not require additional equipment .
The service will be available through satellite, terrestrial transmission, and a dedicated FreeTV mobile application, making it accessible to users in urban centres, rural communities, and areas that were previously underserved.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, said the initiative reflects the administration’s broader strategy for digital inclusion .
“FreeTV speaks directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of Renewed Hope towards expanding access, creating opportunity and ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location or income, can benefit from the digital economy,” Ebuebu said .
He added that families across Nigeria can now enjoy quality digital television without subscription costs, while local content producers, technicians, and young creatives gain new platforms and job opportunities .
The government also announced plans to establish regional production studios in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Benin. These hubs are expected to create employment opportunities for content creators, editors, camera operators, sound engineers, and other media professionals .
The Federal Government reaffirmed that the final switch-off of analogue television transmission remains scheduled for December 31, 2028. Citizens are encouraged to check the compatibility of their decoders and download the FreeTV mobile application ahead of the nationwide rollout .
The launch of FreeTV marks a major step in Nigeria’s journey toward full digital broadcasting, with officials expressing optimism that the initiative will improve access to information, create jobs, and support the country’s creative economy .
