Four Years Later: Army Recovers Remains of Slain Soldiers Killed on Way to Wedding in Imo.

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the recovery of the remains of two of its personnel who were killed in Imo State back in 2022. The two soldiers, a retired Master Warrant Officer and a Lance Corporal, were travelling to the woman’s hometown for their traditional wedding when they were taken and murdered.

The military says the couple — Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew — were attacked by suspected members of IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). It happened along the Ubaha–Orsu axis in Imo State.

For their families and colleagues, the recovery brings back a chapter of pain that never really closed.

In the last week of April 2022, Linus and Gloria set out on what was supposed to be a happy trip. They were heading to Gloria’s hometown for their traditional wedding ceremony — a time for family introductions and celebration across different backgrounds.

Linus had already retired from active service after many years in the military. Gloria was still serving. Friends who knew them well have said the couple shared a bond built on respect and understanding. They managed a long-distance relationship for a while — Gloria posted in Sokoto, Linus living in Makurdi — and decided to build a life together.

But somewhere along the Ubaha–Orsu road, their journey ended in violence. They were taken by armed men. What followed, according to military sources, was a killing that left many in uniform shaken — not just because of the brutality, but because it cut short a story that should have been about joy and new beginnings.

In military circles, the memory of fallen colleagues is rarely forgotten. The Nigerian Army says it never stopped trying to locate the remains of Linus and Gloria, even as years passed and hope faded for some.

That effort paid off on April 24, 2026. Troops from the 82 Division, working with other security agencies, carried out a clearance and search operation in the same general area where the couple was last seen alive.

Security sources say the operation was driven by fresh intelligence pointing to possible gravesites in the area. But as the troops moved closer to the suspected locations, they came under heavy gunfire. Fighters believed to be from IPOB/ESN tried to block their advance — first with an ambush, then with another organised attack.

The soldiers did not back down. They fought through both assaults and pushed the attackers back.

After securing the area, the troops carried out a thorough search of the surrounding bush. They found shallow graves, which they suspect contain the remains of the two slain personnel. The graves were carefully opened, and the remains were collected for forensic testing.

Military officials say they are now working to contact the families of the deceased for DNA verification. That step is needed to make sure the remains are properly identified before any final burial arrangements are made.

Once identification is confirmed, the Nigerian Army says the couple will be given a burial with full military honours.

The killing of Linus and Gloria was not an isolated incident. At the time it happened, the South East was already dealing with frequent attacks on security personnel and civilians. Many people have been displaced. Many families have lost loved ones. Businesses and daily life have suffered.

IPOB and ESN allegedly claimed responsibility for several of those attacks. In response, the military and other security agencies have continued operations in the region, using a mix of patrols, intelligence, and joint missions to try to restore calm.

For now, the Army says its focus is on giving Linus and Gloria the farewell they deserve — one that recognises their service, their sacrifice, and the life they wanted to build together before it was taken away.
