FRSC Officers Seize US License of Nigerian Visitor – Video Shows the Officers Clashing With US-Based Man.
A video making the rounds online has put the Federal Road Safety Corps in a difficult spot. The clip shows a team of FRSC officers stopping a Nigerian man who lives in the United States. The man was driving with his US driver’s license. The officers took it from him and told him he would face a mobile court on Monday.
But the conversation did not end there. A social media user who was tagged by Blackduse to the trending video decided to break down what really happened. According to him, both sides got something wrong. But the officers, he said, failed to act like professionals.

What the Video Shows
In the clip that has since gone viral, the US-based man can be heard trying to explain himself to the officers. He told them he believed his valid US license allowed him to drive in Nigeria for up to three months. The officers did not agree. They seized his license and made it clear they were not backing down.
The man sounded frustrated. The officers sounded firm. And by the time the video ended, nobody looked good.

What the Law Actually Says
This is where things get a little complicated. The social media commentator who analyzed the situation took time to explain the real position of the law.
He said the US-based man was not completely correct. You cannot drive in Nigeria with just a US driver’s license. Even if the license is valid. Even if you have only been in the country for a few weeks. The law requires something extra.

According to him, any foreign license must be accompanied by a valid International Driving Permit (IDP). That permit is what gives a visitor the right to drive in Nigeria for up to three months. Without it, the US license alone does not mean much in the eyes of the law.
So in that sense, the man was wrong. Ignorance of the law, as the commentator pointed out, is not an excuse.

But Here Is Where the Officers Were Wrong
The commentator did not stop there. He turned his attention to the FRSC officers and let them have it.
He said the officers knew the man did not live in Nigeria. They could hear it from his explanation. They could see it from his license. So instead of getting into a shouting match and seizing his license like he had committed a serious crime, they should have done the professional thing.
That professional thing, he explained, was simple. Lecture the man politely. Tell him about the IDP requirement. Let him know he was wrong. Then fine him appropriately and send him on his way.

He wrote that there was no need to drag the matter as if the man had killed someone with the vehicle. He said the officers are public servants and should not get upset when a member of the public behaves rudely. That, he added, is how you sell a good image of the country.
The video has since attracted many comments from Nigerians on social media. Some people sided with the officers, saying the man should have known the law before getting behind the wheel. Others agreed with the commentator, arguing that the FRSC needs to do better when dealing with people who clearly do not live in Nigeria.
One Facebook user summed up the feelings of many by saying that Nigerian FRSC officers need to improve how they treat people. Another person said the officers had a point but lost it when they started acting like the man was a criminal.
At the end of the day, this is not really about a US license or an IDP. It is about how authority is exercised on Nigerian roads. The law is there for a reason. Nobody is saying officers should ignore it. But there is a way to enforce rules without turning every stop into a battle.
The man will likely have to face that mobile court on Monday. His license is gone for now. But the video will remain online. And for the FRSC, that might be the bigger problem. Because people are watching. And they are taking notes.
