Lieutenant Colonel Obinna Okolo Killed in Boko Haram Attack, Governor Donates N50 Million to Family.
The Nigerian Army has lost one of its own. Lieutenant Colonel Obinna Chidiebere Okolo, an officer known for his bravery and professionalism, was killed during an attack by Boko Haram on 16 February 2026.
The incident happened at Mandaragirau, a community in the Biu Local Government Area of Borno State. The officer was on duty when the attackers struck. He did not survive.
His death has brought grief to his family, his colleagues, and many Nigerians who have followed the long fight against insurgency in the northeast.
Lieutenant Colonel Okolo, often called O.C. by those who knew him, was described by fellow officers as a soldier who gave his all to the job. He served in some of the most dangerous areas of the country and never backed down from a fight.
One military source who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “He was the kind of officer soldiers wanted to follow. He led from the front. His loss is heavy on all of us.”

News of his death spread quickly, and tributes began to pour in from different parts of the country.
On 10 April 2026, a funeral service was held for the late officer in his hometown of Obinofia Ndiuno, located in the Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. Family members, friends, and military personnel gathered to give him a final salute.

At the service, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum made a donation of fifty million naira to the family of the fallen officer. The money, according to officials, is meant to support those he left behind.
A representative of the governor who was present at the event said the Borno State government will continue to stand by the families of soldiers who lose their lives defending the country. The government has promised not to forget the sacrifices made by these men and women.
Lieutenant Colonel Okolo’s death is a reminder of the price paid daily by military personnel fighting insurgency in parts of the country. Many soldiers have lost their lives in Borno and surrounding states over the years. Each death leaves behind a family that must learn to live without a father, a husband, a son, or a brother.

For the Okolo family, the pain is still fresh. Friends who attended the funeral said his mother could barely hold back tears. His children sat close to relatives, trying to understand what had happened.
As of now, the Nigerian Army has not released an official statement detailing the circumstances of the attack. But those who knew Lieutenant Colonel Okolo say his name will not be forgotten.
He went to war. He fought. And he fell. That is the story of too many Nigerian soldiers. But for his family and his community, he was not just a soldier. He was their son, their father, their brother. And now, he is their hero.
