Kidnapping: Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar Dies in Bandits’ Den, Katsina Government Confirms.
The statement came from the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu. According to the commissioner, Major General Abubakar officials say he passed away from complications related to diabetes and hypertension. In other words, his health gave way while he was still being held.
It is a bitter detail. The man survived decades of military service, including dangerous assignments. But two weeks without proper medication or medical care, while being held in a criminal hideout, was too much for his body to handle.

For those who followed military affairs between 2015 and 2017, his name is well known. Abubakar served as the Director of Defence Information (DDI) and was the official spokesperson for the Nigerian military during those years. He was the face behind many briefings, the voice that explained military operations to the public, and a man who dedicated his life to defending his country.
Retirement was supposed to be his time to rest. Instead, he and his wife found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The news of his death has once again brought a familiar but painful question back to the lips of many Nigerians. How many more people must be taken before something changes?

Every week, there are reports of kidnappings along major roads, inside communities, and even in schools. Some victims are lucky. They pay ransoms and return home shaken but alive. Others, like General Abubakar, do not make it back.

His wife, Amina, remains unaccounted for at the time of this report. It is not yet clear whether she has been released, is still being held, or is facing her own health struggles in captivity. Families across the country are watching and waiting for updates, hoping that her story ends differently.
Behind the ranks and the titles, Rabe Abubakar was a husband and a father. He was someone who had already given his best years to the military. To lose him this way—abducted on a public road, dying without his family by his side is a great blow to the Nigerian military.
