Lagos stood still on Wednesday as Nollywood actors, musicians, and fans packed a Lekki event center to say goodbye to one of their own. Alexx Ikenna Ekubo Okwaraeke, the beloved movie star who passed away after a fight with metastatic kidney cancer, was honored at a Service of Songs that turned into a celebration of a life well lived.

The ceremony took place on June 10, 2026, at The Monarch Event Center in Lekki. It marked the beginning of the late actor’s final burial rites. Following a request from the Ekubo family, everyone in attendance wore all-white outfits — a choice meant to represent love, peace, light, and the joyful spirit Alexx carried throughout his time on earth.

The venue was filled with familiar faces from the Nigerian movie industry. Kate Henshaw, Nkechi Blessing, IK Ogbonna, Nancy Isime, Stan Nze, Ini Edo, Ruth Kadiri, and Yomi Casual were among those who came to pay their respects. Many were seen hugging each other, wiping away tears, and sharing quiet stories about the actor they had lost.

Alexx’s death had already thrown the entertainment world into mourning. But on this day, the mood was a mixture of sorrow and gratitude. People laughed as much as they cried.

One of the most moving moments came when a tribute from Alexx’s father was read out loud. The room fell silent as the words of a parent who had buried his child filled the hall.

Then came IK Ogbonna. The actor, known to be one of Alexx’s closest friends, walked to the stage and delivered a speech that left few eyes dry. He spoke about their brotherhood — the late-night calls, the shared dreams, and the kind of friendship that does not end with death.

Nancy Isime also took a moment to remember her colleague. She described Alexx as someone who always lifted people up. “He had a way of making you believe you could do anything,” she said.

Singer Yemi Alade shared a story that many in the audience had never heard before. She recalled how Alexx supported her in her early music career. When she was still trying to find her footing, he agreed to star in the music video for her hit song “Johnny” without asking for a dime.

“He did it for free,” she told the crowd. “He believed in me before anyone else did. That was the kind of person he was.”

Spiritual support came from Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, who led prayers to comfort Alexx’s widow, Anwuli, and the rest of the family. Gospel singer Moses Bliss was also present, leading worship sessions that turned the event center into a place of healing through music.

Alexx Ekubo was known not just for his roles on screen but for his kindness off it. Colleagues described him as someone who never looked down on anyone, who showed up for friends, and who faced his illness with a quiet bravery that surprised even his doctors.

As the Service of Songs came to a close, family members thanked everyone who came. They said the turnout was proof that their son, husband, and brother had touched more lives than they would ever fully know.

The final burial rites are expected to continue in the coming days. But for now, Nollywood has paused to remember a man who gave his all — to his craft, to his friends, and to the people who loved him.
