One-Month-Old Baby Dies In Captivity After Kaduna Abduction; Kidnappers Demand ₦7 Million For Mother And Corpse.
A tragic update has emerged from Kaduna State, where a 32-day-old baby who was taken alongside her nursing mother has died while in the hands of kidnappers.
The infant was among 37 residents abducted during an Easter Sunday attack on April 5, 2026. Armed bandits had struck two churches in the Ariko community, killing several worshippers before carting away dozens of locals. The baby and her mother were both taken from the Mother Cat community in Kachia Local Government Area.
According to sources close to the affected family, the baby’s health began to fail days after the abduction. Without access to proper medical care or adequate feeding, the one-month-old could not hold on. Her death inside the hideout has left the mother in deep anguish, even as she remains in captivity.

Following the infant’s passing, the kidnappers have now changed their demand. They are asking for ₦7 million before they will release the grieving mother and hand over her baby’s remains. Family members say they are struggling to raise that amount, especially after many of them have already sold belongings to gather earlier ransom payments for other relatives.
One relative who spoke to our reporter on the condition of anonymity broke down while sharing the news. “She was just a month old. She never even had her first birthday. What kind of people do this?” the relative said.

The Easter Sunday attack was one of the deadliest in the area this year. Many of the 37 people taken that day are still being held. Some families have paid ransom to secure the release of their loved ones, but others are still waiting and hoping.
Local authorities have not issued an official statement on the infant’s death. But security sources say efforts are still being made to locate the hideouts and bring back those in captivity. So far, no rescue operation has been confirmed.
The death of the baby has brought fresh outrage on social media, with many calling for stronger action against banditry in the region. One user wrote, “A baby cannot even be spared. This is too much.” Another said, “The government must do something now. How many more children will die like this?”

As of press time, the kidnappers have not set a new deadline for the ₦7 million ransom. Family members are pleading with well-meaning Nigerians and organisations to help them raise the money so the mother can be freed and the baby given a proper burial.
“We cannot bring her back to life,” the relative added. “But we can at least bring her body home.”
