Teenage Girl Caught Red-Handed With Heavy Pumping Machine as Residents Reject Police Involvement

Teenage Girl Caught Red-Handed With Heavy Pumping Machine as Residents Reject Police Involvement.

A quiet Sunday morning took an unexpected turn in one residential compound when neighbors caught a teenage girl trying to walk away with a water pumping machine.

The incident, which was shared online by a female resident who witnessed everything, has since sparked heated conversations about rising theft and the growing struggles many families are facing.

According to the woman’s account, she was inside her bathroom getting ready for church when the young boy living with them started shouting for her.

“Aunty, come! A thief has entered our compound,” the boy said.

At first, she did not believe him. Their gate is always locked, and every neighbor has their own key. But when she rushed outside, she saw that a small crowd had already gathered at the backyard. Right there in the open, a young girl was holding their pumping machine.

“I couldn’t believe it,” the woman wrote. “Something this heavy — even me I cannot lift it. How did she carry it?”

When she asked the girl who sent her, the teenager responded in Hausa that she did not understand English. So the woman asked one of her neighbors to help with the questioning.

That was when the full story came out.

The girl confessed that she and others usually steal items like this and sell them to people who buy iron scraps. When asked how much she would get for the pumping machine, she said ₦1,000.

The machine is worth about ₦180,000.

The woman said she felt both shocked and angry at the same time. One of her neighbors suggested calling the police, but she refused. The last time they reported a thief to the authorities, she explained, the suspect was released without their permission. On top of that, they still had to pay money.

“That experience really discouraged me,” she said.

Instead, she proposed taking the girl to the traditional ruler of their area. But the neighbors were already too upset. They insisted that before handing her over, she must reveal the person who has been buying stolen goods from her.

The woman ended her post with a warning to others. She said people should be careful because some individuals come around pretending to be beggars or even shoe repairers. They look around, study the compound, and come back later to steal.

“Stay vigilant,” she wrote.

Public Reactions

Many people who reacted to the story online did not just focus on the girl’s actions. Instead, they pointed to the harsh economic conditions in the country. Several commenters said the current hardship — made worse by some of the policies under President Tinubu’s leadership — has pushed many people, including young ones, into desperate situations.

One person wrote, “A girl that age should be in school or learning a trade. For her to steal a heavy machine for just ₦1,000 shows how bad things have become.”

Another said, “Nobody is born a thief. But when hunger bites too hard, people do things they never imagined.”

While some called for the girl to face consequences, others argued that the real criminals are the ones buying stolen items for cheap prices and encouraging this cycle.

As for the woman who shared the story, she has since advised families to keep a closer watch on their surroundings and not leave valuable items exposed.

“Life can be surprising sometimes,” she wrote. “I never believed a young girl like this could even carry a pumping machine, talk more of stealing it.”
