Over 80 Arrested in Kaduna Over Mob Killing of Islamic Teacher – Ummulkhairi.
The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested more than 80 people in connection with the brutal killing of an Islamic school teacher who was lynched and set on fire by a mob over a false accusation of child theft . Twenty-four suspects have already been arraigned before a Magistrate Court, with over 70 others still under investigation .
The suspects, comprising 20 males and four females, face charges that include criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, mischief, destruction of public and police property, and culpable homicide . They appeared before Magistrate Court Number 4 at NDA Junction, Kaduna, where the case was adjourned until July 21, 2026, for further hearing . The court ordered that all suspects be remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case .
The incident occurred on June 21, 2026, in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State . The victim, Malama Ummulkhairi Usman, a mother of four and respected Arabic teacher, had left her home in New Maraban Jos to attend an Islamic lecture at Madrasat Tashiyhul Iman in the old Maraba area.

According to accounts from family members and witnesses, she became separated from her companions and stopped to ask some children for directions . Some women in the area raised an alarm, accusing her of attempting to kidnap the children . The allegation spread rapidly through the community.
Police officers rescued her from the initial crowd and took her to a nearby police station for her protection . Relatives, community leaders and Islamic scholars arrived at the station, identified her as a respected teacher, and made it clear there was no evidence to support the accusation against her .
But by then, emotions had taken over. A crowd numbering about 600 people reportedly stormed the police station, overpowered officers on duty, forcibly removed her from custody, and set upon her . She was killed and her body set on fire in front of the station . A motorcycle belonging to one of the scholars who had tried to intervene was also burned.

The killing has taken a troubling turn with allegations that police officers may have played a role in the mob’s attack. Amnesty International, in a statement, said eyewitnesses told the organisation that as the crowd invaded the police station, officers on duty brought the victim out and handed her to the mob that killed her .
The husband of the deceased, Aliyu Muhammad, has also alleged that a Divisional Police Officer removed her hijab and ordered her out of the station . He recounted to BBC Hausa that the couple had been married for 14 years and had four children—two boys and two girls .
Amnesty International Calls for Independent Probe
Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killing and called for an independent, impartial investigation . The organisation said the police cannot be trusted to conduct an unbiased investigation into the matter .
“The fact that Nigeria Police are assuming that they can investigate themselves is bizarre and unacceptable,” Amnesty said in a statement . The group noted that Nigeria’s police have failed in many cases to investigate mob killings and bring perpetrators to justice .
Amnesty described the incident as part of a growing pattern of mob violence across the country . “It is appalling that mob violence is gradually becoming the norm nationwide. It is largely meted out based on suspicion, rumour, or hearsay,” the organisation said .
The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the attack, describing the act as barbaric and a direct assault on the rule of law . The Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Rabiu, assured the public that the command is committed to securing justice for the victim and maintaining law and order across the state.

The Kaduna State Commissioner for Women Affairs visited the family and assured them that justice would be served. Lawmaker Mohammed Bello El-Rufai also condemned the act, calling it a “stain on our collective conscience.”
The killing has left a family shattered. Her husband is now left to raise their four children alone. The youngest, just four years old, keeps asking why her mother has not come home .
Ummulkhairi left home that morning in search of knowledge. She never made it to the lecture. She never returned home. She was taken away by a false accusation, by a crowd that refused to listen, and by a society that failed to protect an innocent woman.
