Owerri Police HQ Attack: See The Last Words Of Former IGP, Adamu That Cost Him His Job.
President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali, as the new Acting Inspector General of Police.
Alkali replaces Mohammed Adamu, who is currently on an official visit to Imo State.
During his visit to the Imo Police Command headquarters and Owerri Prison on Tuesday, Adamu ordered police officers to ” crush IPOB and ESN” and deal ruthlessly with members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and ESN.
President Buhari had extended his tenure on 4 February 2021, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act 2020, Section 7 (6) of which stipulates a single four-year term with no option of renewal for the incumbent Inspector General of Police.
It states that ” the person named to the position of Inspector General of Police shall hold office for a period of four years. “
” Each police officer shall, on induction or appointment, serve in the police for 35 years or until he attains the age of 60 years, whichever is earlier, ” according to Section 18 (8) of the Act signed by President Buhari on September 15, 2020.
Adamu, however, had served two months and three days of the three- month extension.
His successor, Alkali, who was DIG of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), was appointed by the Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, on Tuesday.
The new acting IGP was born in 1963 and joined the Nigeria Police Force in March 1988.
He holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and a Bachelor of Arts (ED) in Political Science from the University of Maiduguri and Bayero University, Kano respectively.
Alkali is a member of the National Defence College and the International Association of Chiefs of Police and has attended several professional courses and workshops.
The Yobe- born police officer has held several strategic positions in the past.
These include: Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5 Benin, Zone 4 Makurdi, Zone 7 Abuja, and Chiefs of Police of FCT and Delta Commands, among others.
