Bible Reading Marathon: Nigerian Woman Finishes 144-Hour Guinness World Record Attempt.
A Nigerian woman has completed a 144-hour marathon reading of the Holy Bible, aiming to set a new Guinness World Record. Habibat Salawudeen Ihiovi-Jack finished the six-day challenge on June 29 after reading continuously under strict Guinness World Records guidelines .
The event, titled “144 Hours in the Word,” began on June 22 at the Novotel in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Throughout the challenge, Ihiovi-Jack read aloud from a lectern while digital timers tracked her progress. Supporters, family members, friends, and church members gathered to cheer her on, with videos circulating on social media showing the final moments of the attempt.

Under Guinness World Records regulations, participants are allowed only limited breaks for essential needs, meaning the reading continued around the clock . The attempt required years of preparation, with organisers saying the journey first began in June 2022.
According to her Senior Pastor, Dr Andy Osakwe of Summit Bible Churches Worldwide, the marathon was never solely about breaking a record. He described it as a spiritual project intended to encourage believers to engage more deeply with Scripture and strengthen their commitment to Bible study.
Ihiovi-Jack is a member of Summit Bible Church in Port Harcourt, and the church rallied behind her throughout the endurance exercise.

This attempt follows a wave of Guinness World Record bids by Nigerians in recent years, particularly in endurance-based categories . In 2024, Nigerian reader Samson Ajao was officially recognised by Guinness World Records for the longest marathon reading aloud, after reading continuously for 215 hours. That achievement surpassed the previous record of 124 hours set by Kyrgyzstan’s Rysbai Isakov in 2022.
Ajao’s success, along with the popularity of other endurance challenges like Hilda Baci’s cook-a-thon, has inspired more Nigerians to take on record attempts across different categories.

With the reading now complete, the attempt moves into the official verification stage. Guinness World Records will review video recordings, witness statements, time logs, and other supporting evidence before deciding whether the feat meets all official requirements .
The organisation has not yet announced when a final decision will be made. If approved, Ihiovi-Jack’s performance will be entered into the Guinness World Records database as the recognised benchmark for her chosen category.
