The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued five kidnapped victims following an intensive joint security operation conducted in the Byazhin area of Abuja.

Acting on intelligence gathered from recent kidnapping incidents within the Paze community, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, personally led a clearance operation involving operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the NPF Intelligence Response Team (IRT), and the Kubwa Area Command. They worked alongside local hunters and vigilante groups.

On 9th June 2026, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the joint security team launched an intensive search and rescue operation across Paze and Byazhin communities. The team engaged suspected kidnappers in a gun duel, resulting in the death of two suspects. Two others, identified as Icheh Mohammadu and Abubakar Usman, were arrested. Other gang members escaped into nearby hills with various degrees of bullet wounds.

The police team recovered two AK-47 rifles with magazines during the operation.

The command has called on healthcare practitioners, private and public hospitals, and members of the public to promptly report any individual presenting gunshot-related injuries or seeking treatment under suspicious circumstances.

The sustained pressure mounted on the criminal elements forced them to abandon five hostages, who were promptly rescued unharmed.

The rescued victims have since been taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while efforts are ongoing to reunite them with their families. Search operations continue across the general area and adjoining communities aimed at apprehending the fleeing suspects and dismantling the criminal network.

The Commissioner of Police commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by the operatives and supporting local security volunteers during the operation. He reaffirmed the command’s resolve to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes across the Federal Capital Territory.

The police command has urged healthcare workers to be vigilant and report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot wounds. This appeal comes as security agencies intensify efforts to track down fleeing suspects who may attempt to seek medical care in hospitals or clinics.

The command also encouraged members of the public to remain security conscious and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.

The rescue operation comes amid growing concerns about security in the Federal Capital Territory and its surrounding communities. Kidnapping for ransom has become a recurring challenge, with victims often held in forested areas or abandoned buildings.

The proactive approach demonstrated by the police command, including the Commissioner’s direct involvement in field operations, signals a more aggressive stance against criminal elements operating within the territory. The use of local hunters and vigilante groups as force multipliers has also proven effective in navigating the difficult terrain where kidnappers often hide.

However, security analysts have pointed out that while this operation was successful, the challenge remains enormous. Kidnapping gangs have become increasingly sophisticated, often operating across state lines and maintaining networks that provide them with intelligence on potential victims.

The recovery of two AK-47 rifles suggests the kidnappers were well-armed and prepared to resist security forces. The fact that two suspects were killed and two arrested indicates the level of resistance encountered during the operation.

Kidnapping cases in the FCT have drawn national attention in recent months. Victims have included students, commuters, and residents of communities on the outskirts of Abuja. The security forces have been under pressure to respond more effectively to these incidents.

The success of this operation will likely boost public confidence, at least temporarily, in the ability of security agencies to address the kidnapping crisis. However, residents of communities like Byazhin and Paze remain cautious, knowing that the criminal elements that escaped could return.

The police command has assured residents that search operations will continue until all fleeing suspects are apprehended and the criminal network is completely dismantled.

The command also emphasized the importance of community cooperation in security matters, urging residents to share information that could help prevent future incidents.

For now, five families can breathe a sigh of relief. Their loved ones are safe, receiving medical care, and will soon be reunited with them. But for many others living in communities around the FCT, the fear of being the next victim remains real.

The police command has promised to sustain the momentum of this operation and extend similar efforts to other areas experiencing security challenges within the territory.

As investigations continue and search operations press on, the hope is that more successes will follow, and that the criminals responsible for terrorizing communities will be brought to justice.
