Tears and Joy as Bandits Free Maryam After Months in Captivity (Video).
There was a wave of relief across Nigeria on Wednesday following the release of Maryam, a young female student who had been held by suspected bandits for several months.
Her freedom became public after she appeared in a video call with popular online activist D English Alhaji. In the clip, Maryam looked alive and in stable condition, bringing an end to weeks of worry for those who had followed her story. The video has since spread widely on social media, pulling emotional reactions from many Nigerians.

D English Alhaji played a central role in securing her release. He not only raised money from Nigerians but also handled talks with the bandits. During the process, he openly blamed the government, saying officials knew where the bandits kept Maryam but chose not to act. He also accused authorities of treating the bandits with too much care. This is not the first time the activist has stepped in. He earlier helped negotiate the freedom of Abba, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who was taken by the same group.

Maryam’s kidnapping had earlier caused serious concern on social media. Disturbing videos had emerged showing her in captivity, begging for help. Those clips reminded many people of the growing problem of kidnapping for money in several parts of the country.

While the full details of how she was let go remain unclear, similar cases usually involve back-and-forth talks between families and those holding their loved ones. So far, security agencies have not issued any official statement about Maryam’s release or whether anyone has been arrested in connection with her abduction.
Her safe return has brought great relief to her family and to many Nigerians who had kept her in their prayers. At the same time, it has renewed the call for better security measures to tackle the ongoing threat of kidnapping across the country.

For now, Maryam is back with those who love her. And for the family, the long wait is finally over.
