The family of a well-known Abuja lawyer, Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo, has confirmed her death after she was taken by kidnappers earlier this week. The news has sent a wave of grief and anger through Nigeria’s capital and the legal circles she was a part of.
Initial reports had suggested her death was linked to criminal “one-chance” operators. However, in a detailed account, the family has now clarified that she was abducted for ransom and later found dead.
The ordeal began on the afternoon of Monday, January 5, 2026. Barrister Chigbo was on a call with her sister, Anthonia, when the line suddenly filled with the sound of her distressed cries before going completely silent. Attempts to call her back failed repeatedly.

When a call finally connected, a man’s voice, laced with curses in both English and Hausa, delivered a chilling demand: “Send three million Naira or else we will kill her.” The line went dead again, leaving the family in a state of panic.

They acted quickly, reaching out to police authorities through multiple channels, including text messages to senior officers. They were directed to the Commander of the Scorpion Squad, the unit handling kidnapping cases in Abuja. The Commander assured them that police were tracking the kidnappers, who were believed to be moving, and suggested they might release her after receiving payment.

But the kidnappers never called back to arrange a ransom drop. In a heartbreaking turn, the only other contact came when the family managed to dial her phone again. Instead of a negotiator, they heard Barrister Chigbo’s own voice, faint and desperate, pleading, “I am dying… save me, please send the money, I am dying,” before the connection was lost for good.
The family remained in contact with police through the night, hoping for news of a rescue. By early Tuesday morning, the police Commander expressed concern that she had not been released. He later called to say a woman had been found in a critical condition and taken to a hospital, asking for a photo to help with identification.
Her elder sister, Maureen Chigbo, flew from Lagos to Abuja. At the hospital mortuary, she was faced with a devastating sight: her sister’s body bore clear signs of a violent and painful end, including severe bruising and a head injury.

Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo was more than a victim of this crime. She was a former treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association (Abuja branch) and an active member of several legal associations, including the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA). She also served as a former President of the Catholic Lawyers Association in Abuja and was a devoted member of several church groups, having even authored a book on the Infant Jesus.

In a statement, the Chigbo family thanked the police for their efforts and cooperation. They have now appealed to the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation that brings those responsible to justice. They also expressed deep gratitude for the support and prayers from her friends, colleagues, and the public.
Funeral arrangements for the late lawyer will be shared by the family at a later date. Her death has left a painful void, raising familiar and urgent questions about safety and security in the nation’s capital.
