Xenophobia: Congolese Boxer Roméo Katompa Reportedly Killed in Johannesburg – Police Open Investigation.
The boxing community and the Congolese diaspora are in mourning following reports that professional boxer Roméo Katompa, popularly known as “Bololo,” has died in Johannesburg, South Africa .
According to reports circulating on social media and several news platforms, Katompa was found dead after a fire broke out at his home in Yeoville, a Johannesburg suburb with a large migrant population, during the night of July 16 and 17 . He was 35 years old.

In a statement, police condemned “the allegations circulating on social media linking the fatal fire of a house in Yeoville to the protests against undocumented migrants” . They added that “initial investigations and testimonies collected suggest that the victim was inside the house at the time the fire started and could not escape. At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown and is the subject of an ongoing investigation” .
The Congolese embassy in South Africa has also issued a statement, saying it has “undertaken the necessary steps with the competent South African authorities and is following the evolution of the investigation very closely” . The embassy added that “at this stage of the investigation, no official element allows us to conclude that this is an act of xenophobia,” while appealing to the public to avoid sharing unverified information.

In boxing circles, Katompa was a respected figure. He reportedly served as a sparring partner for fellow Congolese boxing star and former world champion Ilunga Makabu.
