16-Year-Old Axe Boy and His Friends Caught on CCTV After Robbing and Killing a Victim in Enugu

16-Year-Old Axe Boy and His Friends Caught on CCTV After Robbing and Killing a Victim in Enugu.

The story coming out of Agbani in Enugu State is one that has left many people shaking their heads. Not because robbery is new. Not because young people have not done bad things before. But because of how small the reason was.

A 16-year-old boy named Chukwuemeka Obiedum is an SS2 student of Union Secondary School, Agbani. He comes from Ifitani, a community in the area. According to reports, he had one thing on his mind – he wanted to get a gift for his girlfriend in his school.

But he had no money. So he decided to get it another way.

He called two of his friends. He told them to follow him for a robbery operation. The plan was simple: go to Ngige compound, snatch some phones, and run away. The phones would be sold, and with the money, he would buy the gift.

But things did not go as planned.

The three boys got to the compound and jumped over the fence. Once inside, they came face to face with a man. They demanded that he hand over his phone.

The man refused.

That refusal cost him his life.

According to confessions made later, one of the boys, Odinaka Obike, 18 years old, picked up an axe and used it on the victim. Odinaka is from Ebonyi State but lives at Amaorji Street. The blow was deadly. The man died on the spot.

The three boys ran away after that. They probably thought the night had covered their tracks. They probably believed no one would ever know what they did.

But they were wrong.

What the young men did not know was that new solar streetlights had been installed around that area. Those lights did more than just shine. They had cameras attached to them.

In the middle of that night, the cameras recorded every move the boys made. The jumping of the fence. The struggle. The axe. The running away. Nothing was missed.

The next day, security vigilantes in the area got to work. Using the footage from the streetlight, they traced the boys and fished them out one by one.

When they were caught, they did not deny anything. They opened their mouths and confessed to the whole thing.

During questioning, the boys gave their reasons. Chukwuemeka, the 16-year-old who started it all, said he wanted money to buy a gift for his girlfriend. That was it. That was the whole plan.

Odinaka Obike, the 18-year-old who swung the axe, did not claim self-defense. He did not say it was an accident. He simply admitted that he used the weapon to kill the victim after the man refused to give up his phone.

The third boy, whose name was also given during the confession, was there as a follower. But in the eyes of the law, being there might be enough.

People who have heard this story in Enugu and across Nigeria are asking hard questions. How does a 16-year-old boy, still in secondary school, decide that killing someone is the way to get a gift for a girlfriend? How does an 18-year-old hold an axe and bring it down on a stranger who only refused to hand over a phone?

Some are blaming the parents. Others are pointing at the schools. A few are saying the boys were simply evil.

But one thing is clear. A man is dead. A family is mourning. And three young men, one of them still a child by law, are now sitting in trouble that no amount of phone money can fix.

The solar streetlight that caught them may have done its job. But for the victim and those who loved him, that job came too late.
