Gun Battle in Delta Forest: Wanted Kidnap Kingpin Abubakar Usman Arrested, Woman Rescued Unharmed.
A woman who was taken against her will earlier this month has been freed after security forces stormed a forest hideout and engaged suspects in a gunfight, leading to the arrest of a wanted gang leader.
Mrs. Blessing Chiedu was abducted on July 2, 2026, while travelling along the Ani-Ifekide Farm Road in Ubulu-Uku, Delta State. Her captors demanded a ₦100 million ransom for her release, throwing her family into a state of fear and uncertainty.
But a joint operation involving the Delta State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad and the Hydra Tech Surveillance System changed the course of events. The security team tracked the kidnappers to a forest hideout in Ogwashi-Uku, where they moved in to rescue the victim.

Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who confirmed the rescue, said the operation did not go smoothly. When security operatives arrived at the hideout, the kidnappers opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
“The suspects engaged the security team in a gun battle, but our operatives were well prepared,” Gwamnishu said. “They overpowered the gang and rescued Mrs. Blessing Chiedu unharmed.”
During the operation, one of the gang’s alleged leaders, Abubakar Usman, was arrested. Usman, a Fulani bandit who had been on the wanted list of security agencies, is believed to be behind several kidnapping cases in Igbodo, Umunede, and other nearby communities. Other members of the gang managed to escape during the chaos, but security forces say they are still in pursuit.

Gwamnishu was full of praise for the security operatives and everyone who played a part in the rescue mission. He expressed gratitude to the Delta State Government, the police, local security groups, and community leaders for their support throughout the operation.
“Mrs. Blessing Chiedu has been reunited with her family. She is safe and unharmed, and that is the most important thing,” he said.
He also reaffirmed the commitment of his organisation to continue working with security agencies and community stakeholders to eliminate kidnapping and improve the overall security situation in the region.
Kidnapping has been a recurring challenge in many parts of Nigeria, including Delta State. In recent months, security agencies have stepped up efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in forests and remote areas.
The arrest of Abubakar Usman is being seen as a win in the fight against organised crime in the state. Security sources say he is believed to have provided leadership for a gang that has terrorised several communities, and his arrest may help authorities gather more information about other criminals still at large.
