A vigilante in Ogun State, identified as Mr. Sani Haruna, was interviewed following a reported attempt on his life by bandits when he was on a mission to rescue some medical practitioners who had been abducted.

According to him, he engages in farm work and assists other farmers to make a living. The hunter stated that he and his team of vigilantes, a total of 26 men, had been called for assistance following the kidnap of a doctor and a nurse.

So, they rented five bikes, and went to Ibarapaland in Oyo State, after they received intel that the doctor and the nurse had been taken to a rock called Amule. They left the rock and moved to another rock called Odetedo, searching the area for any signs of the abductees.

The vigilante states that he noticed some individuals, about 15, on motorbikes flashing their headlights at the vigilantes, making him to hide and lie in ambush while instructing his men to keep watch.

They looked like army officers, according to the vigilante. After trying to inform one of them that he was an officer like them, they reportedly opened fire on him, and he ordered his men to retreat. He exchanged fire with the bike men and dropped some of them.

The crossfire lasted for about 3– 4 hours, with the attackers stated to have shot him over 20 times. He says that he was shot in his right shoulder with nine bullets, while three hit his lower arm and armpit.

He kept up the gunfight until his boss, along with some of the other vigilantes, provided reinforcements and drove the bandits away.

According to him, the bandits were equipped with pump- action rifles and AK- 47 assault rifles, while he and his team had only locally made arms and Dane guns.

He says he is still treating his gunshot wounds traditionally, rather than in the hospital, because the bullets he was shot with were not ordinary. However, none of his men were killed in the ambush.
