Iran Allegedly Executes 18-Year-Old Melika Azizi Over Charge of Waging War Against God.
Iranian authorities have allegedly carried out the death sentence on 18-year-old Melika Azizi, an Iranian woman whose case drew attention from human rights groups following her arrest during nationwide protests earlier this year.
Ms. Azizi, a resident of Masal in Gilan Province in northern Iran, was taken into custody in early January 2026. She was later charged with “moharebeh,” an offense that translates to “enmity against God” or “waging war against God.” The charge is used by Iranian courts in cases involving actions such as burning state symbols or participating in protests deemed a threat to the ruling system. The conviction carries a mandatory death sentence.

She had been held at Lakan Prison near the city of Rasht while her case moved through the judicial system.

According to accounts from opposition sources and activists who followed her case, Ms. Azizi made a defiant statement during her trial. When addressing the judge, she reportedly said, “You let so many young people bleed. How can I remain silent? I don’t care—just kill me.”
Her mother later described her daughter’s only crime, in her view, as refusing to stay silent.
Reports from human rights organizations in the weeks leading up to the execution had flagged Ms. Azizi’s case as one involving high risk. Alerts from groups such as Hands Off Cain noted the possibility of an imminent execution, citing reports of pressure on detainees to provide confessions amid a wider wave of repression following protests in 2025 and 2026.

Her execution comes during a period when Iranian authorities have reportedly carried out several death sentences against young people arrested in connection with protest activity. Recent reports from outlets including The Media Line and Ynet had listed Ms. Azizi among those facing the highest risk, alongside others such as a 19-year-old wrestler who was also executed in recent weeks.
As of the time of this report, Iranian state media had confirmed the execution, ending weeks of uncertainty surrounding her fate.
