Nigerians Demand Justice after Video of SS3 Student Brutally Beaten by Lagos Teacher Surfaces Online.
A growing number of Nigerians are calling for answers after a female secondary school student was allegedly beaten by a staff member in what many are describing as an excessive use of force.
Maryiane Okonkwo, an SS3 student of Command Secondary School in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos, was reportedly assaulted by the school’s bursar, Farouk Ohieari. The incident has sparked outrage across the country after videos of the aftermath began circulating on social media.
According to multiple sources, the teenage student was heard crying for help during the incident. The reason behind the beating remains unclear, as neither the school management nor the victim has come forward with details about what led to the punishment.

In the viral video, Maryiane is seen with visible marks and injuries. Viewers described the footage as disturbing, with many questioning how a school official could go this far in disciplining a student.
Citizens who have seen the video are now pressing for a proper investigation. Many argue that whatever offense Maryiane may have committed does not justify the level of violence shown in the clip.

“This is not discipline. This is something else entirely. A child should not be marked like that by anyone, not even a teacher,” said a Lagos resident who shared the video online. “We need the authorities to step in and ensure this does not get swept under the carpet.”

There are fears that the school may try to handle the matter internally by simply transferring the bursar to another post. This would allow him to escape punishment and continue working with children, critics say.
Some individuals who spoke on the matter alleged that similar incidents may have happened in the past at the same school. They claim that because the school is run by the military, many parents have chosen to remain quiet rather than speak out against staff members.
“Parents are scared. They feel if they complain, their children will be targeted or victimized,” said a former parent of the school who asked not to be named. “So they keep quiet and hope it does not happen to their own child again.”
This time however, social media has made it harder to ignore. The video has been viewed thousands of times, with many users tagging human rights groups and government agencies to step in.
As of now, no official statement has been released by the school or the military authorities overseeing it. Maryiane’s condition is also unknown, though reports suggest she may be receiving medical attention.
Observers are asking the same question: what could a young student have possibly done to deserve this kind of treatment?
For now, Nigerians are watching closely to see if anyone will be held responsible. Many say this case must not end like others before it—in silence.
