She Sold Her First Son for ₦700k, Her Newborn Was Sold for ₦1.1M. How VDM Rescued Her

She Sold Her First Son for ₦700k. Her Newborn Was Sold for ₦1.1M, How VDM Rescued Her.

This is one of those stories that makes you want to look away. But you should not. Because what happened to this woman, and what she did, is a window into how desperation can break a person down piece by piece.

A Nigerian mother, whose name is being kept out of reports for her safety, recently reached out to activist VeryDarkMan after months of trying to get help. When he finally listened, what he heard was a story that stretched back years and involved two of her children, a fake surrogacy deal, and a newborn taken right from a hospital bathroom.

This is how it all happened.

The First Deal

The woman was struggling to take care of her eight-year-old son. The boy’s father was not doing much to help. At some point, she was selling indomie on Facebook for as little as ₦2,000 just to survive. That is where she was in life when a family friend approached her with an offer.

The offer was a surrogacy deal worth ₦2 million. No money upfront. Just carry a baby for a family that wanted one.

She agreed. But instead of going through IVF, the family convinced her to conceive naturally. That meant moving into their house and sleeping with the husband until she got pregnant. She did. She delivered the baby at a private nurse’s home, not a hospital.

After the birth, the family paid her only ₦700,000. Their excuse? Things had changed.

She took the money and went back to Lagos. She lied to her partner that a friend abroad had sent it. She used the cash to rent a house and start a small business. The business later failed. The money ran out.

The Second Pregnancy

She got pregnant again, this time for her own partner. But things were worse than before. They could not afford proper antenatal care. In her worry, she reached back out to the same family friend who had connected her to the first family. She asked for a loan.

Instead of a loan, the family friend made her a new offer after seeing her on a video call. ₦3 million for this new baby too.

She said no. This one was her partner’s child. She was keeping it.

The family friend changed tactics. She told the woman to come to Aba, promising to take care of her throughout the pregnancy. No strings attached.

The woman went. But once she arrived, the pressure started again. Sell the baby. She kept refusing. Eventually, the family friend turned cold and threw her out of the house.

She moved in with a friend and delivered at a hospital. She could not even pay the hospital bills. Her partner back home sold a client’s television to send her ₦50,000. In her desperation, she called the family friend again, this time just asking for help with the bills.

The family friend came to the hospital. While the new mother was in the bathroom taking care of herself after delivery, the family friend picked up the baby, walked out, and disappeared.

Minutes later, an alert of ₦1.1 million hit the woman’s phone. Then a warning came with it: stay quiet. The family friend said she was influential and would expose that this was not her first time selling babies.

She told her partner what happened. He begged her to come home. But at the park, she had no transport fare. This part is messy. Reports say she had ₦1.1 million in her account but for reasons not fully clear, she could not access it for fare.

The bus manager asked her for sex before letting her board. She had just given birth. He agreed to settle for touching her, and she manually satisfied him. She eventually made it home.

After that, things got worse. She developed a drug habit. Most of the money disappeared. She gave her partner, the man who had sold someone’s TV to send her ₦50,000, exactly ₦50,000 back.

How VeryDarkMan Stepped In

She had been messaging activist VeryDarkMan for a while with no response. Then one day, she reached him in Abuja. He listened. Then he acted.

He took her to the police and filed a petition. He led a team to Owerri, where they arrested the family friend. During interrogation, they discovered the baby had already been sold to a lawyer for ₦4.5 million. That lawyer was also arrested. The lawyer’s defense? She thought it was a legitimate motherless baby home.

Both the family friend and the lawyer are now remanded in custody.

The mother has been reunited with her one-month-old baby. VeryDarkMan has also taken in her eight-year-old son, enrolled him in school, and put the mother on a monthly salary so she can care for her newborn without making the same choices she made before.

It is not a happy story. But it is one where things did not end as badly as they could have.
