Imagine living your entire life without ever seeing a woman. Not your mother, not a stranger on the street, not even a photograph. It sounds like something from a dystopian novel, but this was the real-life story of Mihailo Tolotos .
Tolotos was born in 1856 in Halkidiki, Greece . Just four hours after his birth, his mother passed away . With no family to care for him, the infant was left at the gates of a monastery on Mount Athos.
The monks took him in and raised him within the walls of one of the most isolated places on earth . He grew up there, trained as a monk, and never once stepped beyond the monastery boundary .
Mount Athos is unlike anywhere else on the planet. For more than a thousand years, a strict rule has banned women from setting foot on the peninsula . Not just women, but female animals too. Cows, sheep, and goats are not allowed, though cats get a quiet exception for their mouse-catching skills .
This rule is called the avaton . It dates back to a Byzantine decree issued by Emperor Constantine Monomachos in 1060. The ban applies to everyone. Tourists. Journalists. Political leaders. No woman can enter.

The monks believe the Virgin Mary is the spiritual guardian of the land, and they consider Mount Athos her garden . For them, the rule is not about hatred. It is about separation and living a life focused entirely on prayer and discipline.
Tolotos did not just live without seeing women. According to a newspaper report from 1938, he also never saw a car, an aeroplane, or a movie .
While the world outside evolved with technology and change, he remained inside the monastery walls . His days started before sunrise. Silence was common. Routine was everything .
There were no cities to visit, no shops, and almost no contact with outsiders. News from the outside world arrived slowly, if it arrived at all.
For Tolotos, never seeing a woman was not something he felt deprived of. It was simply reality.
The Edinburgh Daily Courier ran a short item on October 29, 1938 . It read: “Without ever seeing a woman in the 82 years of his life, Mihailo Toloto has died in Mount Athos Monastery, in Greece. Neither had he beheld an automobile, a movie or an airplane. His mother died when he was born, Athens reports, and he was brought up in the monastery, where no woman ever enters” .
The story also appeared in other newspapers of the time, including the Waikato Times in New Zealand.
When Tolotos died, the monks held a special burial ceremony for him. They believed he may have been the only man in history to live and die without ever seeing a woman.
Did He Ever Wonder?
People often ask whether Tolotos wondered about what he was missing. But there is no record of him expressing curiosity, regret, or longing . The monks who lived with him described him as calm, gentle, and deeply devoted.
When someone grows up inside a single system and never leaves it, that system stops feeling like a restriction. It becomes the world. Absence only hurts when you know alternatives exist. For him, they did not .
Today, Mount Athos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts thousands of male visitors every year But the ban on women remains in place. In 1997, two female politicians from Sweden and Finland objected to the exclusion of women, saying it went against European principles of equality.

The monks were worried. Some even called the Schengen Agreement “Satan’s work” because they feared it could lead to women being allowed onto the mountain. The monks saw it as a threat to their thousand-year-old tradition.
Despite the debate, the rules have not changed. The mountain remains a sanctuary for those who choose monastic life.
