Viral Video Shows Police Greeting Armed Riders.
A video circulating on social media has generated strong reactions after it appeared to show police officers greeting heavily armed men on motorcycles at a checkpoint in northwestern Nigeria. The footage, which many online commentators claimed showed security personnel allowing suspected bandits to pass freely, has raised fresh questions about the security situation in states affected by persistent attacks.
The Nigeria Police Force has now addressed the matter, offering a different explanation for what the video actually shows. According to the police, the armed individuals seen in the footage are not bandits but recognised community security volunteers working alongside law enforcement .
In the footage, a large group of men riding motorcycles is seen passing through a checkpoint while a police officer appears to wave at them and direct traffic as the convoy moves along the route . A voice heard in the background, speaking in Hausa, refers to the riders as “barayin daji” – a term commonly used to describe bandits – while another person quickly cautions him against speaking further .
The clip spread quickly across social media platforms, with many Nigerians expressing shock and anger at what they saw as evidence of collaboration between security forces and criminal groups . The incident is said to have occurred along a route between Zamfara and Sokoto states, two areas that have experienced some of the worst bandit violence in recent years.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, dismissed the claims surrounding the video as false and misleading .
The police explained that the individuals captured in the footage are “duly recognised members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters” who are actively supporting security operations in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State .
According to the statement, the video shows nothing more than a routine interaction between a police officer and community security volunteers as they headed to a designated operational area . The police stressed that such engagements are part of established security arrangements aimed at improving intelligence gathering and strengthening community policing efforts .
The police also pointed out that the footage does not show the riders engaging in any hostile behaviour or targeting the stationary vehicles nearby – something that would be expected if they were indeed bandits .
The police explanation has not satisfied everyone. Many Nigerians remain unconvinced, with some questioning why community security volunteers would be carrying such weapons and who provided them with that level of firepower .
Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, was among those who voiced concern over the video. In a post on his Facebook page, he expressed alarm at what he described as the normalisation of banditry in the country. “Seeing that bandits now move openly on highways in large numbers on motorcycles, heavily armed, while security personnel stationed along the same roads can do little more than exchange greetings with one another is heartbreaking,” he wrote.

The police have warned against the spread of unverified information, saying that misinformation can cause panic and undermine public confidence in security institutions . They have also said that those involved in creating or sharing false information capable of threatening public peace could face legal consequences .
This incident comes at a time when bandit attacks continue to affect communities across the North-West and North-Central regions . States including Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, and Niger have all recorded attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling in recent months .
Just over a week before this video emerged, security forces in Zamfara state successfully repelled an attack on communities in Maru Local Government Area, neutralising six bandits in the process . Local vigilantes have been playing an increasingly active role in these operations .
The role of community security volunteers has become a subject of ongoing debate across the country. Some states have moved to arm vigilante groups to help fill the gap left by overstretched security forces . In some cases, these groups have been seen as effective allies in the fight against banditry.

Yet questions remain about how these groups are armed, who oversees them, and whether local security arrangements are always properly coordinated with formal security agencies . The viral video, whatever it actually shows, has brought these questions back into public view.
For now, the police have made their position clear. Whether the public accepts that explanation – or continues to question what they saw with their own eyes – may depend on how much trust remains between citizens and the authorities tasked with protecting them.
