Saint Dorothea (or Dorothy) was born in Cappadocia at the end of the 3rd century. Daughter of a Christian family, she inherited her parents’ faith. These were martyred by the Roman Empire for not denying Jesus Christ. Because of her knowledge of Christ and all the experience of her parents’ martyrdom, the young Dorothea chose virginity in order to consecrate herself to the Lord and to be able to dedicate herself totally to Him, in the practice of charity, prayer, and fasting. Therefore, she became a sign of holiness, humility, faith, goodness, and prudence.
The Persecution Of Saint Dorothea
Because she stands out for her example of Christian faith and love, Saint Dorothea was one of the first Christians to be persecuted by a governor named Fabrício. The latter had received direct orders from the Emperor to eliminate Christianity in the Cappadocia region. Dorothea was arrested and taken to a terrible interrogation. Before the magistrates, she remained firm in the faith and did not renounce Jesus, as they demanded. On the contrary, full of faith and joy, she said: ” I am in a hurry to get to Jesus, my Lord, who called my parents to himself” .
The Promise Of A Miracle
For not renouncing her faith in Jesus Christ, Saint Dorothea was condemned to death. When her sentence of condemnation came out, a lawyer named Theophilus, who was present, told the saint in a mocking tone that she should send roses and fruits from her Lord’s garden. Saint Dorothea, however, took the joke seriously and told him: ” If you believe in God, I will do what you ask of me. ” The Advocate felt the surprising force of Saint Dorothea’s words of faith, and he waited, trying to cling to some hope of faith.
The Miracle Of Flowers And Fruits
Arriving at the place where she would be beheaded, she asked the executioners for a few moments to pray. They conceded. She knelt down, prayed, and then called to a six-year-old boy who was standing nearby. The boy went to her. Then, Saint Doroteia wiped her sweaty face with a handkerchief and handed the handkerchief to the boy, asking that the handkerchief be given to the lawyer Teófilo.
At the exact moment that Saint Dorothea was beheaded, the boy handed the handkerchief to Teófilo. Seeing the lifeless body of Saint Dorothea, the lawyer took the handkerchief to his face and felt a strong and unforgettable perfume of flowers and fruits. Theophilus knelt there, asked God for forgiveness for having persecuted Christians, and was converted. Because of his testimony of faith, he was also arrested and forced to renounce his faith in Christ. As he did not resign, he was also beheaded, giving a great testimony of faith in Our Lord. Many were converted because of his witness.
