Breaking: IG Recommends Dismissal and Prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman Over Delta Killing.
The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has taken a firm step in the case of Mene Ogidi, a man who lost his life in Delta State following an encounter with police officers. In a recent statement released by the police headquarters, the IG recommended that ASP Nuhu Usman and several other officers involved in the incident be dismissed from the force and prosecuted.
This move comes after weeks of public outcry over the killing. Many Nigerians had called for justice, asking that the officers involved be held responsible for their actions. The police leadership has now responded with what appears to be a clear direction.
According to the statement, the recommendation followed an internal review of what happened in Delta State. The findings, the IG said, showed that the actions of ASP Nuhu Usman and the other officers were not acceptable under the rules and laws guiding the police force.
The statement read in part that the officers would face the full weight of the law if the recommendation is accepted. Dismissal from service and criminal prosecution are now on the table.

Mene Ogidi was killed in circumstances that many described as avoidable. Witnesses in Delta State had earlier given accounts that painted a troubling picture of what happened that day. While the police initially asked for patience, the pressure from civil society groups and ordinary Nigerians did not die down.
The case became one of several recent incidents that have put police conduct under a bright light. But this latest announcement from the IG’s office suggests that the authorities are ready to act differently this time.
A senior police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the IG was serious about this one. “He wants to send a message. If you cross the line, even if you are an ASP, you will not be covered,” the source said.

The recommendation for dismissal and prosecution is not the final step. The police internal machinery still has to process the dismissal, and the prosecution will require the cooperation of the state’s legal authorities. But the IG’s public statement has already shifted the conversation. Many are now watching to see if the officers will actually be taken to court.

Human rights lawyers have welcomed the move but are waiting for action. “We have seen recommendations before. What we need is to see the officers in handcuffs and in court,” one lawyer told this news platform.
Others have praised the IG for coming out openly. A social media user wrote, “At least he did not hide the report. That is progress. Now let us see the prosecution.”
The police statement did not give a timeline for when the dismissal or trial would happen. But the IG made it clear that the force would not stand in the way of justice.

For many Nigerians, this case is a test of whether the police can truly police themselves. The killing of Mene Ogidi is one of many. But the response from the top might set a new example.

Family members of the deceased have kept quiet for now, waiting to see the outcome. Friends of Ogidi, however, have said they are encouraged by the IG’s statement but will not celebrate until the officers are convicted.
The eyes of the public are now on the Delta State judiciary and the police leadership. If prosecution happens, it could mark a change. If it does not, the anger will only grow.
We will keep watching this story and bring you updates as soon as more information comes in.
