The event united a 95-year-old Muslim sheikh and a 14-year-old girl as husband and wife. According to people close to the ceremony, the sheikh, who is reported to have several other wives, stated that the marriage was one of mutual affection.

“Sheikh Hussaini Duma Jagaba, who was part of it, said the groom explained they are both in love with each other,” one source noted.
An eyewitness to the wedding shared their thoughts, echoing the groom’s reported stance. “As I witnessed this, I prayed for God to save the marriage. Fourteen years and 95 years,” the witness said. “When we spoke to the old man after the wedding fatiha, he told us he doesn’t care what people say. He said they love each other. Some might think they forced her or she married him for money. People should stop thinking negative things about their marriage.”
This event is not an isolated one in the region. Marriage to underage girls remains a practice in parts of Africa, including within some Muslim communities in Nigeria. The recent Abuja wedding, with its age difference, has therefore done more than join two individuals. It has served as a fresh spark, forcing a community and a nation to once again look at the gap between traditional practice, religious interpretation, and growing calls for the protection of children’s rights.
