According to a story in the PREMIUM TIMES newspaper, the Edo State Police Command said on Saturday night that a number of passengers waiting to board a train from Igueben in the state’s Igueben Local Government Area to Warri in Delta State had been abducted by alleged herdsmen.

The event occurred on Saturday, January 7, at 4 p. m, according to a press release from the Command that was released at around 9. 55 p. m. and confirmed by its spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor.

The AK 47 rifle-wielding suspected herders, who entered the railway station, fired randomly into the air, then led an undefined number of would-be travelers into the jungle, according to the statement.

The Command continued by stating that some of the passengers had been shot during the incident and that rescue efforts to find those who had been abducted had already started by searching through the jungle.

The text of the statement reads: ” This is to inform the gentlemen of the press that today, 7th of January, 2023 at about 1600hrs, an unspecified number of Herdsmen armed with AK 47 riffles attacked the train station at Igueben, Edo State and kidnapped an unspecified number of passengers who were waiting to board the train to Warri.

” The kidnappers who shot sporadically into the air before kidnapping some passengers left some persons with bullet wounds. The Area Commander Irrua, DPO Igueben Division, and men visited the scene of the crime with members of Edo State Security Network, local vigilantes, and hunters with a view to protecting the lives and property of the remaining passengers.

“Bush combing operations have commenced in order to rescue the victims and arrest the fleeing kidnappers. Further development will be communicated”, the PPRO stated.
