‘I Had the Honour of Hosting My Brother Peter Obi’ – Kwankwaso on Abuja Meeting

‘I Had the Honour of Hosting My Brother Peter Obi’ – Kwankwaso on Abuja Meeting.

There has been plenty of talk about whether the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is truly on the same page. But if a recent meeting in Abuja is anything to go by, the party’s top two candidates are saying, directly, that reports of division have been blown out of proportion.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is the vice-presidential candidate for the NDC in the upcoming 2027 general elections, played host to the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at his private residence in the federal capital. The meeting took place shortly after Obi returned from what Kwankwaso described as a highly productive trip overseas.

Kwankwaso shared the news on his Facebook page, along with pictures of the two men together. In his post, he made it clear that the gathering was not just a friendly visit. It was a working meeting.

According to the former governor of Kano State, he and Obi engaged in what he called “frank and productive discussions” touching on both party matters and larger national issues. He did not go into specific details about what was discussed, but his choice of words—”frank”—suggests that nothing was held back.

Kwankwaso also used the opportunity to send a message to anyone watching from outside. He wrote that the NDC remains strongly united and that the two of them, as leaders, understand the need for maturity. He added that this means making necessary sacrifices and tolerating differences in order to reach their shared goal.

His closing line was short and direct: “We are resolute in this mission, and together, we shall ensure that Nigeria is OK.”

For people who follow Nigerian politics closely, any meeting between Obi and Kwankwaso is worth paying attention to. The two men lead a relatively new political movement that hopes to challenge the established order in 2027. Rumors have occasionally surfaced about disagreements between their camps, especially after the way the presidential ticket was arranged.

By posting about the meeting himself and calling Obi his “brother and partner,” Kwankwaso seems to be pushing back against those rumors. The fact that the meeting happened at his home, not in an office or a public hall, also sends a message. This was not a formal event with cameras and speeches. It was two men sitting down privately to talk things through.

Neither Kwankwaso nor Obi has announced any major policy decisions or campaign events following the meeting. For now, it appears the main goal was simply to show that the partnership is still intact.

But with the 2027 elections still ahead, such meetings serve another purpose. They remind supporters that the NDC ticket is still moving forward. They also remind opponents that the two candidates are still talking to each other.

Whether that will be enough to build a winning campaign remains to be seen. But for one evening in Abuja, at least, the message from Kwankwaso’s residence was clear: the NDC is not falling apart. Not yet. Not if they can help it.
