A young girl who was still in junior secondary school has died after she was attacked, taken away, and r@ped along a road in Imo State. The incident has left many Nigerians heartbroken and angry.

According to information circulating online, the girl was walking home from school when someone laid in wait for her. She was grabbed, forced away from the road, and assaulted. The attack did not stop until she lost consciousness. She later passed away.

The sad news was first shared widely on Facebook by someone who wrote:

“A junior secondary school girl from Umuhu Okabia in Imo state was ambushed on her way going home from school and was raped till death. What is actually our country turning into for Christ’s sake? The mother couldn’t hold herself when she saw her daughter in the wheelbarrow. What attracted the person to this small girl?”

That post has since drawn thousands of comments from people struggling to understand how such a thing could happen.

A Child, Not Yet Fully Grown

The girl is believed to be between 10 and 13 years old. Those who have spoken about the matter say she had not yet fully developed into maturity. That detail has made the case even harder for many to accept.

One person commenting online asked, “What could any man want from a child who is still growing?” Another said, “This is not just a crime. It is evil.”

The mention of a wheelbarrow in the Facebook post suggests that the girl’s body was carried back to her family that way. When her mother saw what had been done to her daughter, she reportedly broke down completely and could not hold herself together.

At the time of this report, the Imo State police command had not issued an official statement on the matter. However, calls are already growing for the authorities to track down whoever carried out the attack and make sure they face the law.

Some residents in the Umuhu Okabia area have expressed fear that the attacker may still be close by. Others are asking why schoolchildren are no longer safe walking home in broad daylight.

This is not the first time a young girl has been attacked on her way to or from school in Nigeria. Similar cases have been reported in different states over the last few years. Each time, the public reacts with shock, but many feel that not enough is being done to stop these crimes from happening again.

Community leaders and parents have repeatedly called for better security along school routes, especially in rural areas where roads are lonely and help is not always close by. But for this girl’s family, any change will come too late.
